No Longer at Ease, by Chinua Achebe

The second book in Achebe’s “African trilogy”: A classic story of personal and moral struggle as well as turbulent social conflict.

When Obi Okonkwo—grandson of Okonkwo, the main character in Things Fall Apart—returns to Nigeria from England in the 1950s, his foreign education separates him from his African roots. He’s becoming a part of a ruling elite whose corruption he finds repugnant. Forced to choose between traditional values and the demands of a changing world, he finds himself trapped between the expectations of his family, his village, and the larger society around him. With unequaled clarity and poignancy, Chinua Achebe’s No Longer at Ease remains a brilliant statement of the challenges facing Nigeria today.

where's his Nobel Prize?
By Orrin C. Judd
Obi Okonkwo, grandson of the protagonist in Things Fall Apart, is the pride of his Nigerian village, Umuofia. The Ibo villagers pooled their money to send one native son off to England to be educated and Obi was chosen. Now he has returned to a prestigious job with the civil service in Lagos--he's the Administrative Assistant to the Inspector of Schools. He bears the burden of his people's expectations but his exposure to Western culture has distanced him from tribal life and though he is now earning a magnificent living by their standards, he has trouble making ends meet as he tries keeping up with the Joneses in the big city. Borrowing money, he ends up "digging a new pit to fill up an old one." Further complicating matters is his love affair with the lovely Clara, an osu, one of the socio-religious outcasts who also figured prominently in Things Fall Apart.
As financial and romantic pressures continue to mount and his beloved mother sickens and dies, Obi must also deal with temptation, offers of money and sex if he will use his position to assist scholarship applicants. For as long as he can, Obi juggles all of these problems, but gradually they come crashing down on him.
More directly than almost any author I'm aware of, Chinua Achebe faces head on the issues which confront the developing nations in a post-Colonial world. In No Longer At Ease, even as he pokes fun at the remaining English bureaucrats and their condescending ways, he honors their tradition of relatively honest civil service. Meanwhile, he questions whether at least this first generation of natives who are replacing the departing Europeans are truly prepared to meet the same standards or whether a slide into corruption is nearly inevitable.
Obi is a decent enough man and he has the best of intentions, but he gets in way over his head, bringing tragedy down upon himself and disgrace to his village. His situation, as portrayed by Achebe--caught between the traditions and expectations of his village on the one hand and the modern ways and legal constraints of the West on the other--puts him in an untenable position, one where something must give. The title of the book comes from T. S. Eliots's The Journey of the Magi :
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms, But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation, With an alien people clutching their gods. I should be glad of another death.
Achebe offers a fully realized portrait of one of those returned who are "no longer at ease," aliens in their own country. It's a terrific book.

Achebe shows us how reality contrasts with our ideals.
By Anthony D. Riker
Achebe's sequel to Things Fall Apart, he seeks to reconcile and give us a further understanding of the struggle between modernism and tradition. He gives us a view of how our ideals contrast with how we really live and exist in reality. The point of this book can be best summed up by Achebe's own words. He states, "The impatient idealist says: 'Give me a place to stand and I shall move the earth.' But such a place does not exist. We all have to stand on the earth itself and go with her at her pace." This book while centered mainly on the African identity crisis, gives a broad understanding of issues of right and wrong and moral consequences of individualism.

OUTSTANDING SEQUEL, VERY SENSITIVE INSIGHTS
By Denis Benchimol Minev
No Longer at Ease, in my opinion, is actually a better book than Things Fall Apart. Achebe does a masterful job of depicting the experience of an ex-patriate returning home after many years abroad. Such experience is universal, not confined to Nigeria or the main character Obi Okonkwo (grandson of the main character in Things Fall Apart).
In adition to the ex-pat experience, Achebe inserts the peculiarly Nigerian experience, in which a group of British still retained some of the leadership positions in civil service while native Nigerians were mostly focused on politics. The moral aspect is also noteworthy, as the widely accepted corruption and favouring done by Nigerians in power was not mirrored by the British.
Aside from the socio-historical aspect of the novel, Achebe is very sensitive in showing the downward spiral of young Obi, as he tries to fight against strong unreasonable traditions (such as with his girlfriend who is of a banished caste). Obi gets enmeshed in a vicious cycle in which he needs to show success, to a point in which his salary can longer sustain his lifestyle, which is forced upon him by expectations.
I highly recommend this book, especially to ex-pats of any nation. As an ex-pat returned home myself, I feel many of the same difficulties Obi did. Obi's anguish and pain are crystal clear, and any ex-pat will relate.

Jesus Among Other Gods: The Absolute Claims of the Christian Message, by Ravi Zacharias

In a world with so many religions, why Jesus?

We are living in a time when you can believe anything, as long as you do notclaim it to be true. In the name of “tolerance,” our postmodern cultureembraces everything from Eastern mysticism to New Age spirituality. But as RaviZacharias points out, such unquestioning acceptance of all things spiritual isabsurd. All religions, plainly and simply, cannot be true.

Jesus Among Other Gods provides the answers to the most fundamental claims aboutChristianity, such as:

  • Aren’t all religions fundamentally the same?
  • Was Jesus who He claimed to be?
  • Can one study the life of Christ and demonstrate conclusively that He wasand is the way, the truth, and the life?

In each chapter, Zacharias considers a unique claim that Jesus made and then contraststhe truth of Jesus with the founders of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism withcompelling insight and passionate conviction. In addition to an impressive breadthof reading and study, he shares his personal journey from despair and meaninglessnessto his discovery that Jesus is who He said He is.

“In Jesus Among Other Gods, Ravi Zacharias demonstrates that he is one of the most intellectually giftedas well as spiritually sensitive writers of today’s leading apologists for the Christian faith. Zachariasbrings alive the unique power of the claims of Jesus about himself and the utter relevance of his messagetoday for the human condition.”

From Publishers Weekly
When Pope John Paul II called for a massive "new evangelization" of Asia during a November 1999 visit to India, his comments sparked protest from Hindus for whom proselytizing is a form of oppression. The debate underscored the sharp difference between Western creeds such as Christianity and Islam, which tend to be exclusive, and Eastern religions that stress pluralism. This collision forms a fascinating story line, and on that basis Zacharias's new work is superficially intriguing. Zacharias, a Christian apologist who grew up in India, does offer the occasional insight into Eastern religions. He claims that despite the current Hollywood romance with Buddhism as a simple faith of compassion, in most forms Buddhism is actually a complex system, featuring 227 disciplinary rules for men and 311 for women. Yet for the most part, Zacharias is in dialogue here not with Eastern religions but with Western skeptics. He seeks to settle old scores with Darwin and Hume, resurrecting tired debates over the nature of evil and the argument from design without adding anything new to the discussion. His theodicy will be convincing only to committed Christians, and his use of scripture is entirely uncritical (he points out grammatical and textual difficulties in the Koran without even mentioning analogous difficulties in the Bible). There are touching flashes of humanity as Zacharias describes suffering people he has encountered, but on the whole he does little to advance inter-religious conversation. (Aug.)

Poorly Titled, Poorly Executed, and Wrongly Advertised
By Caleb J.
This book failed entirely on almost every level conceivable. From the title and back of the book, one might think it was about comparing other religions to Jesus. Consider the following excerpt from the back of the book: "Jesus Among Other Gods provides the answers to the most fundamental claims about Christianity such as: Aren't all religions fundamentally the same? Was Jesus who He claimed to be? Can one study the life of Christ and demonstrate conclusively that He was and is the way, the truth, and the life? In each chapter, Zacharias considers a unique claim that Jesus made and the contrasts the truth of Jesus with the founders of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism..." What does one think the book will be? An apologetic approach to proving the divinity of Christ and contrasting it with other religions. This book is misadvertised, and calls into question whether or not the writer of the back of the book actually read the book itself. The book is neither a study of comparative religion nor decent apologetics.

What one will find inside is mostly Christian devotionals. Don't get me wrong— from the title, I expected a Christian emphasis— but it is obvious that he never intended to adequately deal with other faiths. On occasion, you will find caricatured versions of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. However, the religions are represented by cherry-picked quotes which Zacharias then rebuts. There is no holistic analysis of the faiths and a comparing and contrasting with the Christian faith: he merely (and very seldom) choses to misrepresent a religion by picking out quotes and rebutting their meaning. However, even mentioning other religions is unscrupulously rare in a book titled Jesus Among Other Gods. As I said above, the VAST majority of the book is Christian devotional material. While the cover and back of the book market it as dealing with comparative religion, the book isn't even structured in a manner that deals with varying faiths. It is focused on dealing with theological questions and how Christianity answers them.

I also claimed the book was not primarily apologetic. There are arguments made on behalf of the Christian faith, but they are far and few between. The material is presented from the vantage point that the reader already accepts Christianity and rejects any other faith, and all arguments are made from this assumption. He even brings up the Scopes Monkey Trial and naturalism in the final chapter and how they deal with the Genesis account, yet never addresses the arguments of naturalism nor offers a defense against it! That is a FATAL flaw in apologetics. The title of the book implies Jesus and his truth and uniqueness will be the central theme of the book, and the book even pretends to be an apologetics text, yet the substance of the arguments is nonexistent.

Nevertheless, there is one (slight) silver lining: he brings up the problem of evil and deals with it quite eloquently. In this chapter, he even brings up and rebuts the views of other faiths (he still caricatures and cherry-picks, but at least he adequately acknowledges alternative religions). This chapter ALMOST made me grant a second star.

Suffice to say, I expected an apologetic defense of the Christian faith against other major worldviews, but all I found were devotionals and half-hearted and inaccurate comparisons . I am truly disappointed with Ravi Zacharias: I love his speeches, yet have yet to find a book by him that is decent.

Zacharias is very clear on the place Jesus occupies in the history of the world. I learned such a lot in the book.

I like Ravi. He is a sharp dude for sure
By BP
I like Ravi. He is a sharp dude for sure. I think his bread and butter though is when he gets in debate mode in regards to Philosophy. I wish there was more of this in the book. It has too much of a "Bible study like book" (biblical interpretation). For sure that is fine, but I can find that anywhere. I wished Ravi would have discussed more arguments in regard to religion and philosophy.

best book on international public relations
By Svetlana
This was my go-to book for my International Public Relations class. Applying the Circuit of Culture model to global public relations instead of a traditional linear RACE approach will certainly make more culturally sensitive and ethical public relations specialists. The second edition is long overdue!

Well researched and engaging
By Binh Siu
I thought "eh" to this book when told it was needed for class, but I found myself surprisingly hooked into international PR campaigns. This book was easy to read and broken into the Five Circuits of Culture so one can better understand the different circuits. Real-life campaigns and examples provide for a good read.

Great Text.
By Primus
Albeit being a tad text heavy, and "difficult" to read. I did enjoy this book. It was extremely helpful in a graduate level PR class I took. The concept, and methodologies discussed are easily applicable in the different situational context a PR professional might find him or herself in.

Now, he's doing collections for a small-time loan shark and thinking maybe it's time he set a few things straight in the world. From award-winning writer Derek McCulloch (Displaced Persons and the Eisner-nominated Stagger Lee) and artist Greg Espinoza, Pug is an unsparing tale of a good man trapped in a life of brutality - 15-rounds of blood and bad memories!

Review
You might remember, long ago, I happened upon a graphic novel called Stagger Lee, by Derek McCulloch and Shepherd Hendrix, and I fell a bit in love. Pug is a new graphic novel from the same writer, and it's a completely different kind of book, which is something I love to see from creators. Hopefully you checked out the preview we ran of Pug back last month, which will give you a good feel for the story.

Some decades back, Jake was a semi-successful boxer, and was pretty well known. But unless you strike it super-rich, a man can only make a living at the sweet science for so long. His options limited, Jake ends up working for a small time hood, as muscle. The whole time, we're transported back, six years ago, where he's supposed to throw a fight. In the locker room before the fight, his wife and son come in, and she pleads him not to make a decision like that. The story simultaneously flips back and forth, and the current story, where Jake is thinking about trying to be a good man, for the love of a new woman, a stripper named Kitten Kaboodle. All along, we see the choices that Jake makes and how they affected his past and his present. It's the tale of a simple man, in a grey world, and it feels exactly like watching a movie from 50 years ago. It's about right and wrong, and finding your strength.

The structure of the story is really impressive, as we go back and explore how Jake got to where he is now. The book is broken up like a boxing match into rounds and rest periods in a really nice structural nod to a boxing match. The breaks serve as a really fun way to get in an out of scenes.

Greg Espinoza does a fine job of building Jake's world. The book is laid out in horizontal format, and the art does what it's supposed to do. It's not about flashy canted angles and crazy panel layouts. It's about the pure one-two punch of basic, useful strip layout and telling a clear cut story, which is exactly how the art should work in this story. The characters are all distinguishable from one another, and the shots of boxing reminded me of Stanley Kubrick's Killer's Kiss, in their stark black and white, as well as the time period, and that is a fine film to evoke.

If you're into classic crime, or old boxing movies, or just classic stories, give Pug a try. It feels a bit like we've unearthed some gem from the past that was made 40 years ago, but just never published. It's definitely worth a read. If my words don't do it, that cover really says everything about the book you need to know. --Josh Flanagan, IFanboy

Like a punch in the gut
By Amazon Customer
Derek McCulloch and Greg Espinoza's "Pug" tells the story of a washed-up boxer named Jake Mahoney who can't catch a break. You really start to feel for a guy that seems to have been life's personal punching bag. I don't want to comment on any details since they need to be discovered by the reader as they turn the pages.

I will comment on the artwork. Greg Espinoza created a very stark and gritty character. He chose to show the (slightly)happier moments of Jake's past in a lighter, cartoonier fashion and adding coarse detail to the Jake of today. It's like sitting with someone watching a movie of their life; clean and crisp on the screen, then you turn to look at them and see the wrinkles and 3-day stubble.

My only complaint was the length. Jake's life was obviously a painful trip from birth to the boxing ring but we only get to see a few key moments. I want to see more of Jake's past. How did he become a boxer? How does he get out of bed every day and still try and do the right thing.

There's more to Jake than meets the eye, but if Jake won't tell us what it is, then Derek McCulloch and Greg Espinoza need to.

A Brutal Knockout of a Story
By Robert Dahlen
In Pug, a washed-up heavyweight boxer finds his already-horrible life getting worse, as he gets pushed into working for a loan shark. Derek McCulloch's script is terse and exciting, switching between boxer Jake Mahoney's troubled life and a key event that drove him down this path. Greg Espinoza scores a body blow with his excellent art, filtering classic action comic strip storytelling through modern sensibilities, making a perfect match for the story. Intense, not for the youngsters, and recommended.

A classic tale...
By William Bradley
Pug is a story of a down on his luck boxer that would have made a classic film noir.
The main character is a moral man trying to live down to other peoples expectations of him. His one skill being that of a boxer, his forced associations cause misunderstandings with the people around him. He "sleeps with dogs" so people assume he has "fleas". This drives the story.

The back-story is on the short side and partly inter-cut with the narrative but it makes for a quick dive into the main plot.

Artistically, I really like the clever art style of the book. It evokes the retro look of the Batman Animated Series character design with the solid framing and pacing of artists like Dave Gibbons.

All in all it's fast paced and just a darn good read.

The More I Wander The Less I Find I Know
By The Wingchair Critic
L. Frank Baum's 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz' is one of the more engaging novels in the famous series. When restless boy hero Woot The Wanderer happens upon the Tin Woodman's palace in the yellow Winkie country and learns of the emperor's origin and history, his question concerning the fate of Tin Woodman's one-time Munchkin fianc, Nimmie Amee, spontaneously hatches a plot to discover her fate.

Joined by the Scarecrow, the three set out on a journey through the amazing and perilous kingdoms of Oz. Uninvited, the three unwisely enter a castle in the purple Gillikin country and are captured by its giant resident, Mrs. Yoop. There they find old friend Polychrome, daughter of the rainbow, already imprisoned and transformed into a canary for the sorceress's amusement.

Yookoohoo sorceress Mrs. Yoop, placid and regal, is one of Baum's more terrifying villains, showing as she does an undiluted sociopathic and amoral indifference to the fates of others, who she physically manipulates to suit her fancies.

Beautiful and poised, Mrs. Yoop, who lives alone in a dead valley, uses her spell-casting talents to provide herself with sustenance; water, pebbles, and bundles of weeds become coffee, 'fish-balls,' and buttered biscuits with a wave of her hand. When Mrs. Yoop tells the journeyers she is unpleased with their present forms and will transform them to her liking in the morning, the unsubtle suggestion that they may be her next meal is clear.

Mrs. Yoop is not only one in a long line of fairytale cannibal giants, but her gigantism and prim, coldly polite manners make clear she is also a figurative as well as a literal devouring mother.

Archetypal motifs abound throughout, their subtexts driving the narrative and creating its sometime disturbing moods and moments. Woot magically degenerates into a green monkey, a form the text makes clear he finds atavistically embarrassing and unpleasant. In a scene fairly brazen for several reasons, agricultural demi-god the Scarecrow sacrifices his body to gain the gorge-spanning services of a straw-eating monster for his companions, only to be imperfectly 'resurrected' on the far side.

The recounting of the Tin Woodman's slow transformation from a healthy Munchkin male into a man of tin underscores the multiple amputations that necessitated the slow replacement of his human limbs with those of metal, allowing Baum free reign to discourse on the nature of identity, though the theme of violence goes undressed.

The book might have been called 'The Tin Woodmen Of Oz,' as by its second half there are two tin men, original Winkie king Nick Chopper and a second, soldier Captain Fyter, who was also once a man and became metal through exactly the same violent process.

Both 'tin twins' have courted Nimmie Amee, and both been plagued by the Wicked Witch of the West in the period before Dorothy's house dropped upon her from the sky.

It's doubtful that readers of the series ever wondered whatever became of Nick Chopper's 'meat' limbs after they were severed from his body, but this volume answers that question.

Together with those of Captain Fyter, the mismatched limbs have been magically glued back together to create errant oddball homunculus Chopfyt, who, perhaps not unreasonably, is aggressive and ill-tempered.

Where does Nick Chopper's humanity and being begin and end? The question comes in for special consideration when, revisiting his place of transformation from human to tin, he discovers his ungroomed human head alive, listless, and able to speak in a blacksmith's cabinet.

Which of these creatures, if any, has a right to Nimmie Amee's hand in marriage? Has Nick, limited to a kind but not a loving heart, a right to invite her to become his bride and the Empress of the Winkies if he can only offer her dutiful companionship?

Baum was unusually sensitive to the details and nuances of his plots, but here unaccountably overlooks a change of gender.

Since Mrs. Yoop's strange Yookoohoo magic cannot be changed or undone by even the most powerful forces in Oz, Ozma, the land's fairy ruler, once a boy herself, comes to the conclusion that the stalwart Woot can only regain his original young man's form if another Ozian creature agrees to take on the form of the green monkey.

Since readers are led to believe that Woot as the green monkey is still a male, Baum trips himself up when a female character is tricked into assuming the monkey's form.

Baum fails to acknowledge that she has not only unhappily regressed into a beast, but now also inhabits a male body.

In an interesting expository section, Oz Royal Historian Baum provides the reader with new facets of Oz's history and its magical rules and regulations.

Once a part of the larger world, Oz, which has always been surrounded by an impassable desert, was enchanted by "the fairy band of Queen Lurline" sometime in the distant past.

From that moment, no one has ever died or grown older in Oz. The young stay young, the old remain old. "Children remain children always, and play and romp to their hearts' content...while babies live in their cradles, are tenderly cared for and never grow up."

Thus Oz is not so very different from Barrie's Never-Never Land (Oz was created roughly four years after Peter Pan debuted on the British stage), especially since children from America--and presumably other parts of Earth--occasionally find their way there.

Dorothy, by the time of 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz' a permanent Oz resident, like Peter Pan, will now never grow older, though she may evolve and mature as a personality. Like Peter Pan, she will never know puberty, sexuality, adulthood, parenthood--or death.

Always more than what they seem, the Oz books entertain, spellbind, and fascinate. 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz,' full of eccentric undertones and undertows, tugs at its readers with its strange siren call and is certain to leave children and adult readers perplexed, questioning, somewhat wiser, and anxiously reaching for the next volume.

One of the Best in the Oz Series
By F. Orion Pozo
Nick Chopper, the famous Tin Woodman of the land of Oz, was once a flesh and blood man. He fell in love with a beautiful Munchkin girl who worked for the wicked witch. The witch tried to break up the couple by enchanting his ax. As his bewitched ax cut off parts of his body, Nick would get the parts replaced with tin prostheses by a tinsmith. He ended up totally tin after his ax split his trunk in half. We all know how he rusted in a sudden rainstorm only to be rescued by Dorothy Gale and an animated Scarecrow, and how the Wizard of Oz granted his wish by giving him a velvet heart.
This book begins years later when a young wanderer named Woot, asks the Tin Man why, after he got his heart from the Wizard of Oz, he never went back to marry that Munchkin lass. The Woodman decides that he owes it to the young woman to go back and fulfill his promise to marry her. So he, the Scarecrow and Woot go off to find the Munchkin woman so he can propose to her. On the way they are captured by a giantess, meet their old friend Polychrome, the Rainbow's daughter, and are transformed into a tin owl, a straw-stuffed bear, and a green monkey. They also run into a second tin man and have a reunion with the Munchkin tinsmith. Who is this second tin man? Will they regain their true forms? Will the Tin Woodman find his sweetheart and marry her? The story is well-developed and fun to read. It is an Oz adventure that all will enjoy.

The Tin Man gets his chance to shine
By Billie Rae Bates
For his 12th book in the Oz series, L. Frank Baum gives the limelight to a character that hasn't had a lot of it in the previous 11: our friend the Tin Woodman, the former Nick Chopper and the current emperor of the Winkies. Indeed, even the Scarecrow, another of the beloved original characters from the first book, has had more airtime in this series, even though he's been largely on the periphery of the storylines.

For the Tin Man's turn, Baum rightly addresses an unresolved issue from Nick's past: Whatever happened to that sweet Munchkin girl he fell in love with as a "meat" man, Nimmie Amee, and shouldn't he do right by her faithfulness to him amid his part-by-part transformation to a tin body, courtesy of the evil enchantment of the since-deceased Wicked Witch of the East? Shouldn't he reward Nimmie by marrying her, making her an empress, even though he doesn't have the same loving heart he used to as a flesh-and-blood man and doesn't really "love"-her-love-her these days?

A new character, a young lad named Woot the Wanderer, becomes so enthralled by the Tin Woodman's back story that he convinces the emperor, along with his best friend Scarecrow, to journey to Munchkin Country and find Nimmie Amee. And so the adventure begins.

Baum gets special praise in this one for explaining how Oz came to be a fairyland, as well as just why the Wicked Witch of the East shriveled up and scattered to dust when she had that fateful meeting with Dorothy's house.
