About the Author

Michael Quinn Patton is an independent consultant with more than 40 years’ experience conducting applied research and program evaluations. He lives in Minnesota, where, according to the state’s poet laureate, Garrison Keillor, “all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.” It was this interesting lack of statistical variation in Minnesota that led him to qualitative inquiry despite the strong quantitative orientation of his doctoral studies in sociology at the University of Wisconsin. He was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota for 18 years, including 5 years as director of the Minnesota Center for Social Research, where he was awarded the Morse-Amoco Award for innovative teaching. Readers of this book will not be surprised to learn that he has also won the University of Minnesota storytelling competition.

He has authored six other SAGE books: Utilization-Focused Evaluation, Creative Evaluation, Practical Evaluation, How to Use Qualitative Methods for Evaluation, Essentials of Utilization-Focused Evaluation, and Family Sexual Abuse: Frontline Research and Evaluation. He has edited or contributed articles to numerous books and journals, including several volumes of New Directions in Program Evaluation, on subjects as diverse as culture and evaluation, how and why language matters, HIV/AIDS research and evaluation systems, extension methods, feminist evaluation, teaching using the case method, evaluating strategy, utilization of evaluation, and valuing. He is the author of Developmental Evaluation: Applying Complexity Concepts to Enhance Innovation and Use and coauthor of Getting to Maybe: How the World Is Changed, a book that applies complexity science to social innovation. His creative nonfiction book, Grand Canyon Celebration: A Father–Son Journey of Discovery, was a finalist for Minnesota Book of the Year.

He is a former president of the American Evaluation Association and recipient of both the Alva and Gunnar Myrdal Award for Outstanding Contributions to Useful and Practical Evaluation and the Paul F. Lazarsfeld Award for Lifelong Contributions to Evaluation Theory from the American Evaluation Association. The Society for Applied Sociology presented him the Lester F. Ward Award for Outstanding Contributions to Applied Sociology.

He is on the faculty of The Evaluators’ Institute and teaches workshops for the American Evaluation Association’s professional development courses and Claremont University’s Summer Institute. He is a founding trainer for the International Program for Development Evaluation Training, sponsored by The World Bank and other international development agencies each summer in Ottawa, Ontario.

He has conducted applied research and evaluation on a broad range of issues, including antipoverty initiatives, leadership development, education at all levels, human services, the environment, public health, medical education, employment training, agricultural extension, arts, criminal justice, mental health, transportation, diversity initiatives, international development, community development, systems change, policy effectiveness, managing for results, performance indicators, and effective governance. He has worked with organizations and programs at the international, national, state, provincial, and local levels and with philanthropic, not-for-profit, private sector, international agency, and government programs. He has worked with people from many different cultures and perspectives.

He has three children―a musician, an engineer, and a nonprofit organization development and evaluation specialist―and one granddaughter. When not evaluating, he enjoys exploring the woods and rivers of Minnesota with his partner, Jean―kayaking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing―and occasionally hiking in the Grand Canyon. Scrap the Teacher. Bring on the Mentor.

I taught a few community college classes, volunteered in grade school classrooms for a few years, and have been teaching my own children for two years. What drags heaviest in these endeavors? Resistance.

Students want to get it over, move on, and get out. No matter how much I wanted them to love what I told them to do, only a few responded happily--and only rarely. They may have been people-pleasers; they may have genuinely liked the work or been grateful to get away from home.

I found Schank through articles in The Washington Post: "No, algebra isn't necessary--and yes, STEM is overrated" and "Why kids hate school--subject by subject".

Student resistance is to be expected, he says. You cannot teach someone something that 1. Does not help achieve some goal they actually hold; 2. Is not in line with their personality; 3. Goes against their subconscious beliefs. You can try. You won't succeed.

He goes on to list the CAPACITIES students should have, like how to diagnose, how to plan, how to influence, how to negotiate, etc.These skills come layered into the goals people naturally set for themselves as a means of getting something they want. They come from doing, trying, and failing. A car fanatic learns to diagnose engines. A parent learns to diagnose a child's quirks and cries. A gamer diagnoses how to advance levels.

Several capacities go along with any situation. Schank says that forcing people to learn subjects separate from each other ("Now let's learn to PLAN!") and devoid of a personal goal is a waste and ineffective.

He also lists *how* to teach these capacities, like "Don't teach it unless you can easily explain the use of learning it" and "A teacher's job is not to tell facts; it's to get students to understand the world better...to encourage them to take on more...to force students to come to conclusions by confronting what they already believe..."

Teachers are not the source of knowledge anymore. They are the mentors "encouraging thinking by making sure students have something confusing to think about."

A very different view into K-12 Education

I am a big fan of Roger's work and frequently visit his websites for ideas and inspiration, so I was eager to read his new book. I was not disappointed! He provides some fascinating insights into the inner workings of the country's Kindergarten throught PhD education system. He has a novel understanding of how people think and learn and advocates creating an education system that is designed to focus on building cognitives skills and processes instead of focusing on the traditional academic content disciplines. As you read the book, you find yourself agreeing with many of his assertions and becoming angry at the entrenched system that blocks all attempts to allow his ideas to be implemented. Roger's fundamental approach to teaching and learning is through what he calls a Story Centered Curriculum. He follows his own advice by delivering most of the information in the book in a series of stories. The result is a very readable, enjoyable, and informative book. You should read it!

Cognitive science theory without the cognition or science.

I'll be frank. I found this book obnoxious. Dr. Schank obviously considers himself quite the pioneer in raising questions about how students learn, "I made up the term learning sciences. There was no such field in academia." (p. xiv) "Cognitive science, a field I also had a big part in creating, has become more important in the academic world." (p. xv) However, his observations about the outdated, irrelevant, and ineffective way we educate the public are the exact same things the unschoolers, the homeschoolers, and the many sects of the education reform movement have been screaming since the 60s. Similarly, using anecdotal evidence and strawman arguments, he does come to conclusions that are supported by actual science (for example, that there are benefits to learning by doing as opposed to by lecture-only, or that e-learning has certain benefits, or that curriculum should be more relevant), but he doesn't use science to support these ideas; it's just coincidence. Other parts of the book are just bizarre. We're supposed to keep compulsory education, but we're not supposed to have any accountability for what schools do or don't teach. Instead, teachers are going to mentor kids with the help of technology. Why teachers would make better life mentors than welders or insurance salesmen isn't explained. Why we should learn to think in the real world by attending school as opposed to interacting more in the real world isn't explained either. He dismisses the idea that the purpose of school is to provide a basic foundation for future learning and thinking, but then takes for granted that school must continue to play an integral part in the upbringing of America's children. He has a whole section on intellectual thinking with examples that any 7th grader could dissect as being illogical. The whole book is like this -- just bizarre. I'm not sure who his audience is, as traditional educators, education reformers, and home/unschoolers would all be able to recognize this book for what it is -- nonsense. How it has gotten positive reviews is beyond me.

A "must-have" book for all those Dentists out there working with Cone Beam Radiography.

So glad I waited for this new edition. The pages and pages of various CBCT images and coloured renderings are amazing in both quality and detail. My knowledge of anatomy has never had such a boost! I found them all so clear and easy to look at and absorb. An extremely valuable book and a great source of reference. Highly recommended!

I'm working off my buttons.

But I'm also giving them away.

The more I fall for Crow, the more I want him to do the things that I want. Dinners, dates, and evenings at the beach.

Everything comes at a price, and quickly the hoard of buttons I worked hard to earn are depleted.

Will this go back and forth forever? Or will someone run out of their buttons first?

I wanted to review this series with the last one, but I just had to write something. I love Crowe and Pearl without a doubt my top 5 fave characters of all time!

The chaotic and graphic scenes are far more worse than that of Fifty Shades, having said that I'm waiting on a movie! I love the sex trafficking theme though because I don't think that people give that enough attention as it should!

I can't wait for the next book to come out! I've preordered mine because I'm ready for the next book!

I would recommend this book to anyone that love chaos and falling in love!

OHHHHH I loved it! The story is just getting better and better......So In this second book Pearl and Crow grow closer. He is still in denial and she is falling hard. Cane really screws up and Crow has a hard time forgiving him. As the situation with Bones grows more serious, Cane and Crow come up with a plan to take him out. As Pearl is rejected she withdraws and doesn't think she will come back from this. Can she find peace? Can she find a way out? You really need to read this book. The characters have such depth. The story and characters have a deep darkness to them. I could not put the book down. The story keeps you captivated page by page. It turns out nothing like what you think will happen and it keeps you guessing and wanting more. Can't wait for Buttons and Pain........impatiently waiting. :)

I love this story. Pearl is such a strong woman. I love reading about women who are strong and capable of taking care of themselves. Sure, we all want a man in our life, someone to love and love us back. We also love being taken care of, bit we are not all whiney basket cases who fall apart and break so easily as portrayed in a lot of books. Pearl is fiesty, independent and a little bit submissive and dominant. I love that, because it is true of most women, who says we have to choose. I hate that most books imply that women are all submissive. What I hate even more is that men seem to think they can make any woman submissive. I love the growing, changing relationship between Pearl and Crow . I love the ending, it was spectacular and epic. I can't wait for the third and final book. But in my mind, I have many questions. How will she be able to support herself without her drivers license, money or credit cards or passport. I can't wait to see what happens next!
