A wonderful adventure

This is a wonderful adventure with the sense of fun that The Littles shares. It has the character of a Dickens tale and an innocent charm beyond that. My eleven-year-old loved it! He couldn't put it down and would rate it a 5 star book. The twists and turns in plot are a bit predictable for an adult, but are pure excitement for a child. The charm of it makes it pleasant reading for all ages.

The Next Installment in a Fantastic Adventure

"Black Hearts in Battersea" is the second book in Joan Aiken's beloved "Wolves" saga, beginning with "The Wolves of Willoughby Chase" and continuing in "Nightbirds in Nantucket". Each book can be read separately and out of order (ie, each is a separate story, not one big story broken into several parts), linked by re-appearing characters, plot lines and locations. Each is set in a cleverly devised "parallel universe" where historical figures and events are changed from what we would recognise in our own history books. In this case, the action takes place in London, where Britain is ruled by good King James III and plauged by maurauding wolves immigrating from Russia, with other little snippets of an alternative history slipped in to give the book a whimsical, but authentic air. Anyone who has read Diana Wynne Jones's "Chrestomanci" books, or Phillip Pullman's "Northern Lights" will have no trouble adapting to this new environment, but those who haven't might be in for a pleasent surprise when they discover some of the little gems Aiken throws in: next to the familiar sights of Hyde Park and St Paul's Cathedral are places such as Battersea Castle on the Thames, made of pinkish stone, and made 'to look like a great half-open rose.' With such a fascinating world to explore, it hardly seems to matter whether there's a story or not.
But of course there is, and it perfectly combines with the backdrop Aiken sets for it. Young Simon the half-wild goose-boy, last seen being offered a painting career by Dr Field in "The Wolves of Willoughby Chase" arrives in London to begin his education at the Art Academy in Chelsea. But things are set to go wrong from the very beginning. On reaching Dr Field's described boarding house, there is no sign of him, and the family Twite insists that they've never heard of him. Befriending their youngest daughter, the rude, filthy, brattish Dido Twite, Simon gradually begins to make his way around in London and at the Art Academy - discovering some very suspicious things concerning the Twites in the meanwhile.
He meets up with his old friend from the Poor Farm where he grew up: the lovely Sophie, who is now the handmaiden of the Duchess of Battersea, and with the young Duke-to-be Justin, a somewhat miserable and pathetic boy. In his ever-growing adventures, including visits with the eccentric Duke of Battersea, strange occurances at the Twites, and a highly enjoyable visit to the Fair, Simon comes to uncover a terrible Hanoverian plot to overthrow the king, and the secret to his own mysterious past. With plenty of wolves, fireworks, shipwrecks, kidnappings, suberfuges, maroonings, hot air balloons, explosions, false identities, lucky escapes and poisoned mince pies, "Black Hearts in Battersea" is a great read, and even better if it's read aloud, either to your own kids or a classroom (the lower classes's Cockney accents in particular are wonderfully created in Aiken's language).
Of course, it is unashamedly filled with quirks, coincidences and long stretches of credibilty that will have anyone over the age of eight that enjoy nice, sensible stories raising an eyebrow in skepticism. To read the book critically would destroy any enjoyment one might have of it, as it is most certainly not to be taken too seriously. How could you when you have lines like: "My own dear husband's dead brother's long-lost child!" Just sit back and enjoy the story, complete with its exaggerations and unlikelihoods, as it harks back to another era where such occurances were taken dead-seriously.
The "Wolves Saga" is a little known, but fantastic series, and I'm sure the previously-mentioned authors (Diana Wynne Jones and Phillip Pullman) owe a lot to Aiken's methods of alternative-history, as she is the first "modern" writer to the best of my knowledge to instigate such a device. Her characters are great fun (though Bonnie and Sylvia of "Wolves of Willoughby Chase" were sadly missed) and her stories filled with non-stop excitement and discovery.

Plots afoot and foiled in an alernate England

This is a direct sequel to "The Wolves of Willoughby Chase," which took place about a year before. In it, for the first time, we learn that Aiken's world is not our own, but an alternate reality in which the Stuarts kept the British throne; the King is James III, the "Hanoverian Wars" were fought some 15 years earlier to keep him in office, and the "Pretender" is "Bonnie Prince Georgie over the water," who is supported at home by a conspiracy of Hanoverians. Simon, the young orphan hero of "Wolves," is now 15, and comes to London to study painting and lodge with Dr. Gabriel Field, whom he befriended in the previous book. When he finds the doctor's lodgings (not without a good deal of misdirection, which proves to be enemy action), not only is Field not there, but everyone insists he never was. Bewildered, Simon manages to gain entry to the art school in Battersea, where he deeply impresses the master and meets Justin, the thoroughly untalented nephew of the Duke of Battersea, whose castle lies directly across the Thames. He soon makes the acquaintance of the Batterseas themselves, a delightfully foggy middle-aged couple (the Duke is a keen natural scientist and experimenter in gas balloons, and his lady has such a horror of boredom that she carries an arsenal of amusements wherever she goes, including the opera), and discovers to his delight that his dear friend Sophie, whom he knew in the orphanage before running away at the age of eight, is now the Duchess's lady's-maid. His friendship with his landlord's slangy small daughter, the neglected Dido Twite, leads him to the discovery of an arsenal of guns and pikes in the Twites' cellar and the realization that the family is Hanoverian--a persuasion shared, as it proves, by just about every servant in Battersea Castle (though not at the Duke's country house in Chippings). After he, Sophie, and the art students foil two attempts on the Batterseas' lives, he learns of a conspiracy to assassinate King Jamie, but is kidnapped to sea before he can warn anyone. Dido and Justin, stowing away on the ship, contrive to rescue him, there's a fire and wreck in a savage storm, and after a series of revelations that would do credit (once again) to Dickens, the conspirators come to their deserved end (or at least most of them do) and Simon and Sophie learn the secret of their roots. Though the British slang used by many of the characters may be puzzling to American readers, it can be worked out from context, and the plot is fast-paced and builds skilfully toward a climax. Robin Jacques's lovely line illo's add immeasureably to the story. "Battersea" defies the maxim that sequels are always inferior to the original. A great read-aloud that all families should own.

This is a striking case study in leadership, both good and bad, that goes way beyond college football and athletics.

This book is stunning - maddening, disgusting, shocking, and ultimately joyous - a deep dive into what was going on during what we Michigan fans like to term "The Horror" or the "Dark Times". Bacon has written a carefully researched and balanced book that at first glance may seem like an indictment of Dave Brandon as Michigan's Athletic Director. But it's not that at all, although later in the book Brandon pretty much indicts himself. Bacon gives him his due for his stint as a U-M Regent and for his open-door policy for student-athletes as AD. Before even going there, the book first establishes the concept of the "Michigan Man" from the earliest years of Michigan Football and sets the bar for what values and traditions are dear to generations of Wolverines. It then tackles the recent history of the program and Brandon's history, laying out the timeline of the program's increasing peril beginning sometime after the death of Bo Schembechler in 2006 through the recent hiring of Jim Harbaugh, Bo's protege. There's a lot of drama between those bookends of time. Lots of division, duplicity, and very "un-Michiganlike" thinking (and doing). What you read, no matter your school affiliation, will have you scratching your head.

In the end, this book shows how a great institution lost its way through questionable leadership, loss of perspective on the things that are important to the university's students, alumni, employees, fans, and athletes, and the placing of self before the whole. It also shows how a grassroots effort by those very people set in motion events that look to restore Michigan Football to a position of respect and power nationally.

Do NOT ignore this book if you're not Michigan fan. This could happen anywhere. There are lessons here aplenty for everyone in a leadership position in any type of organization. This cautionary tale should be required reading for every university president, regent, athletic director, or coach. No organization or the people it serves should ever have to go through something like this again.

A great read for Michigan and non-Michigan fans alike.

An excellent read. In the early chapters Bacon does an excellent job of providing the reader with a brief but detailed history that lays the groundwork for the rest of the book. The information is entertaining enough to keep any Michigan historian engaged but being a Michigan fan isn't a requirement to enjoy the book.
With all the turmoil Michigan fans went through over the years there was bound to be a shocking tale or two about the inner workings of Dave Brandon's athletic department. Unfortunately the volume of issues and inter departmental conflicts in this almost seem too numerous to be real. Through his relationships with University officials and staff John U. Bacon is able to provide painstaking detail. Each misstep is highlighted - from applying a private equity, turnaround CEO mentality in a historically successful athletic department to battles with the student body, MHacks, lettermen, and coaches.
The steady downfall is an intriguing plot line but the "return" of Michigan and its ideals as well as the promise of a bright football future with Jim Harbaugh's homecoming is a perfect ending to the script. If one was ever curious how the best football coach in pro football could turn down the money and bright lights of the NFL to return to Ann Arbor I would suggest picking up this book. If it wasn't all true the reader might surmise the Brandon years to be written up by the best writer's in Hollywood or as a "how-to" by the worst CEO's ever to walk up and down Wall Street.

If you're a Michigan fan, you already know about this book and that you will love it. But I think that anyone who is interested in college sports and university administration in general will enjoy the book.

As a Michigan fan, I loved the behind the scenes descriptions bringing the events I remembered to life. As with any all access sports book, you realize that what happens on the field and in the media is only a small part of what goes into a sports team. Bacon is well connected and has extensive quotes from Will Hagerup and Devin Gardner that help explain what happened on the field for Michigan over the last few years.

What I found to be even more interesting, however, were the parts about the athletic department administration, and particularly Dave Brandon, and the parts about the political structure of the University. The regents and president played a large role from beginning to end of the Michigan athletics "crisis" and Bacon provides a fascinating look into what they were thinking, how much power they actually have, and what compels them to wield it. The book has ample quotes from a number of the regents that add a lot of depth to these sections.

Finally, while the headline-grabbing parts of the book have largely been about the Brandon administration's failures, I think the true message of the book is about the strength of the Michigan community. I was struck by how many people associated with Michigan recognized things they didn't like at a place they loved and set out to change it. Students, former football players, alumni (including Mr. Bacon), fans, regents, and ultimately Michigan's new president Mark Schlissel all contributed in their own ways. Once again, Bacon spoke with all the major parties involved and these sections are rich with detail and first person accounts. The book is an enjoyable read with enough detail that I feel like I know more about the University I graduated from.

Not a bad start but needs an editor/beta

For the most part I enjoyed the book. The h was a tad to Amazonian for my taste, but that in no way detracted from the review. I certainly prefer a strong female lead over a weak, but when she first 'arrived' and was beating off warriors ten times her size with ease I knew how this would go. But no problem. I liked the ingenuity and the 'world building'. I liked the flow and progression of character and plot development. I just felt that an editor was needed. This felt more like a second draft. I certainly was off-put by the constant switch or combination of past and present tenses in the same paragraph. All of them should have been caught as they were pretty obvious.

Not a bad start though, and I will be following this author to see what she produces next.

The very beginning of the book reminded me of another book, Grim.
But I'm glad that I continued reading - really liked the h - very feisty but loving and smart - will love for the author to continue with this series - will definitely purchase any other of her books.

What a great story!

Aside from a few grammatical errors, this was a terrific story. Ms. Snowdon if you are reading this, I do hope that this is a series and you are working on book 2. I love how the characters have their own distinct personalities and how they are interwoven into the storyline. I love science fiction romances and this story was right for me. It had intrigue, suspense,romance,humor, I could go on and on. As you can see, I love the story. Here's hoping Book 2 is out soon

Encouragement, hope, compassion for all......

The author has a BA in ministry and addiction counseling, and Masters
in pastoral counseling. Her work credentials are impressive. But the
heart of her message here is based on life experience - life as a
Catholic, life as the wife, sister, friend of alcoholics. This book
is exceptional because Ms. Sutton lived it.

She was born to an Irish-Catholic mother and German Lutheran father.
Life revolved around hard work, church and school activities, and the
Catholic priests and Sisters who impacted her young life. Ms. Sutton
reached adulthood with a compassionate, forgiving heart and a Catholic
faith that was raw, deep, and indestructible. This faith sustained
her through awful situations that might have broken her otherwise.
Her naieve innocence and joy gave way to life's crushing realities.
First, two of her sisters died young in close succession. Then, her
sweet young husband and father of her five children slowly transformed
into an abusive alcoholic. When she divorced him to escape the
violence, she and her five children lived in abject poverty. She was
anathema - a divorced Catholic with five children, no money, and very
few options. When times were toughest, she looked at her five
beautiful children and told herself, "Don't cry because it's over.
Smile because it happened." From the rock bottom of her life, she
crawled into the light again through meaningful work helping others.

Readers will find great truths in this book, and a bottomless supply
of encouragement and support. Ms. Sutton's book is biographical,
blending her genetic history, faith, sorrows and joys with a
philosophy and profession that demonstrates a strong belief: All life
is sacred in the truest sense of the word. This woman, this counselor
lives Christ's compassion, regardless of circumstance. Through
Christ, through her Catholic faith, through supportive priests and
nuns, through Al Anon, through education and her life work, Annetta
Sanow Sutton found her voice and tries to help others find theirs.

Pope John Paul II's message to his people is Ms. Sutton's message to
readers: "Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter
people and hallelujah is our song."

An honest sharing of life experiences. A narration of making sense out of insane moments and inexplicable violence. The author enters a world many have endured, a world many have witnessed. Some of us turn it around to make goodness happen, some cannot find the strength and fall into abysmal hopelessness. This author brings you up, offers hope, offers direction. This author is effective in life and beneficial in her writing.

Another GREAT read!

So I continue to read the series of Blackwood books & the second was better than the first! The first one gave all the background I needed to carry on reading and not have to try to figure out the who or what behind the characters. I really enjoy the direction these books are going & can't wait for the next and the next... Great book!

Read this second book in the series in two days and it was as great as the first book (which doesn't always happen!). So sad when it was over as I want to know what happens next! More details on Emmy and her husband came in this book and I felt even more interested in her than before. She is one tough lady!! Can't wait to read the next book in the series. You won't be disappointed in this book or series!

I never thought I could follow a series, but this one has me hooked. I didn't think I would be interested in a romantic story, yet this one has more thriller action than most books I've read in a long time. I am happy that I came across this series and looking forward for more to come.

I wish more books were like this one.

A wonderfully straight -forward how-to book on the technicalities and the various methods of binding books. Concentrates exclusively on stitching, introducing many methods unfamiliar to me that are both beautiful and practical. The instructions and drawings are clear uncluttered and easy to follow. The photo's are basic but intended to inform rather than the seduce the unaware into a purchase. It contained everything I needed to know. I wish more books were like this one.

Great book!!

My boss bought a copy of this book for the graphics department (an old edition). I read a few paragraphs and flipped through the pages for a few minutes, then got on Amazon and ordered my own copy. The book would make a fantastic text book for a book making class. It goes into great detail, yet allows for creativity. I'd recommend it highly.

Excellent resource for book artists

I enjoy journaling on blank pages and subsequently binding them into journals. Keith Smith's book on non-adhesive binding is an excellent resource for learning non-conventional binding and book structures.

I enjoyed the book so much, I eventually made mock-ups of nearly every project in this book AND went on to worth through several other of Smith's books.

Smith provides many basic/general techniques in the front of the book followed by specific "recipes." He provides both creative suggestions for content and technical information on structure and assembly. Smith also provides sample photographs of each binding.

One minor criticism: many of the projects suggest using very heavyweight paper--almost watercolor paper--instead of textweight or lightweight. I had to tweak the instructions for binding the lightweight paper I use for journaling.

About the Author

Flavio Junqueira is a member of the research staff of Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK. He holds a PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego. He is interested in various aspects of distributed systems, including distributed algorithms, concurrency, and scalability. He is an active contributor of Apache projects, such as Apache ZooKeeper (PMC chair and committer) and Apache BookKeeper (committer). When he is idle, he sleeps.

Benjamin Reed is a Software Engineer at Facebook working on all things small. His previous positions include Principal Research Scientist at Yahoo! Research (working on all things big) and Research Staff Member (working on the big and the small) at IBM Almaden Research. The University of California, Santa Cruz granted him a PhD in computer science. He has worked in the areas of distributed computing, big data processing, distributed storage, systems management, and embedded frameworks. He participated in various open source projects such as Hadoop and Linux. He helped start the Pig, Zookeeper, and BookKeeper projects hosted by the Apache Software Foundation.

Required reading for distributed system developers and operators

If you're implementing or operating a distributed computing system, some part of your application is going to need asynchronous consensus. Whether your application requires leader election, work queues, synchronized configuration, or similar functionality with asynchronous consensus at its core, you need to use ZooKeeper. Do not try to implement asynchronous consensus yourself! It takes a huge amount of effort to get the underlying algorithms right, to get the programming interface right, and to tune the implementation for real-world operation. The ZooKeeper authors have dedicated years of their lives to solving this problem, so you don't have to do it yourself.

That said, ZooKeeper is a power tool and you can easily cause service outages if you don't use it properly. This book is required reading, because it allows the rest of us to benefit from Flavio and Ben's years of experience working with the ZooKeeper user community. For example, Chapter 5 (Dealing with Failures) gives some very important advice to developers on how to handle connection loss exceptions and return codes. Following the authors' advice leads to quick recovery from transient server failures; ignoring the advice could cause customer-visible performance issues. Another example: Chapter 10 (Running ZooKeeper) starts with a use case that describes how a simple configuration issue resulted in a severe production outage. This kind of configuration issue is now easily preventable if you read this book, understand how ZooKeeper works, and follow the guidance of the authors.

Over the last few weeks, I've been deploying and testing a critical, customer-facing service at Altiscale that uses ZooKeeper for distributed configuration management. Thanks to this book, I was able to learn ZooKeeper quickly, understand our application-level code, deploy (and redeploy) our ZooKeeper servers without any production incidents, and document new processes for testing our ZooKeeper service.

A Reference thats been needed for a long time

A book on ZooKeeper has been needed for a long time. The author walks one through setting up and using Zookeeper; this can be contrasted with the small ZooKeeper section in the Hadoop book. This book is much more thorough and in depth coverage of the topic. While I'm still working through the examples and learning, I can say that it is filling a knowledge void that I've been desperate to address for a long time. (BTW -- I pre-ordered this several months ago)

Engaging read

I really feel like i 'get' zookeper after reading this book. It presents zookeeper in the context of consumers of the service and provides both java and 'c' sample code. It also gets into the internals of zookeeper itself (I must confess that I skimmed this chapter). Top notch information on a fresh approach to distributed systems co-ordination. Definitely worth the money (and more importantly) time.
