wild contemporary crime caper

In 2001, the former drug dealer has retired. His plan is to stay below the radar screen while enjoying the sun in the West Indies. Though he has no plans to return to his capitalism days, his retirement ends when his friend and former business associate Mister Mortimer offers him a venture that he could not refuse.

Before long he is entrenched in London's criminal world and fleeing Venezuelan drug cartel killers in Mayfair. However his biggest problem is not drug dealers, money launderers, financial fraudulent bankers and trained killers; it is the daughter of a South American drug lord who seduces the no longer retiree as he finally found something worth leaving the Caribbean for; if he lives long enough to enjoy her.

The zany sequel to Layer Cake is an over the top of Big Ben crime parody. Incredibly fast-paced and filled with witty sarcasm and asides, Viva La Madness is a wild contemporary crime caper that satirizes the laissez faire gurus who should demand the market place fix the illegal drug problem rather than a government sponsored war. The storyline stars the nameless antihero who knows he should have stuck to early retirement before he becomes permanently retired under the ground by the underground.

This is the second installment of J.J. Connolly's depiction of the life and times of his nameless criminal protagonist. Instead of enjoying his hard earned retirement as chronicled in L4YER CAKE he finds himself caught up in a multi-continental mess that spins from South America to London.

Despite some UK criminal argot that sent me fleeing to Urban Dictionary I really enjoyed this fine crime novel. There is a cross, then a double cross, then a --- well you get the idea. The plot turns come thick and fast. About the time the major players think they have themselves well on top of the pile, interruptions in the form of sniper fire come bursting in to announce the arrival of yet another player.

The cast ranges from underground hackers to little old ladies who dispose of bodies as a sideline. Very few people are who they seem to be and those that are can be found in unlikely alliances with others. Through all the confusion the author moves the action along at a brisk and exciting pace. Everything takes place in a world of madness that somehow makes a terrible sense.

I found this was a vastly enjoyable book and I greatly hope that Mr. Connolly continues his series and shows us further adventures of his nameless protagonist.

Riveting, great character development, page turner that doesn't get boring.

The Sopranos, sure it was about the mob, but we tuned in because of the dynamics between Tony and Carmela, Christopher and Paulie, Bobby and Janice ... that's what you get with Viva La Madness, just sub in the English criminal underworld for the new jersey mafia. To sum it up in a single word, Authentic. Few can master this art. Praise to Connolly for now doing it twice. Fingers crossed for a film to go along, and hope he serves us up another book.

GEORGE KIZER is a telecomm consultant specializing in microwave radio engineering and training. Before retiring from Alcatel North America's Wireless Transmission Division in 2001, he worked at Collins Radio and Rockwell International's Microwave Division of the Collins Radio Group. Mr. Kizer also served as chairman of the TIA's Fixed Microwave Section from 1991 to 1996.

Very impressive, this isn't just a book, it's an encyclopedia of all subjects related to Point to Point Microwave systems.
It is likely to become THE reference book for practicing engineers in this field. The author, in addition to sharing his personal experience, has done a very extensive search and study of the related literature (each of the 16 chapters has several pages listing reference documents, including some unpublished ones!.) The book includes very thorough descriptions and calculations of the different factors to consider in designing microwave links.
There are also many beneficial observations concerning realistic application of formulas.
Convenient tables can be found e.g.: choice of K factor (which is too often only presumed),
Although I don't understand the practical value of numbers given to the 13th decimal point, I am impressed by the extensive demonstration of antennas near-field power density calculations, a subject not often covered, yet important in view of the MPE legal requirements . It could also be useful in determining RFI within the multitude of antenna "farms".

The analyses of rain fading, obstructed paths and paths performance are more detailed than usually found and will be quite useful. So are the 12 pages (Appendix B) concerning personnel & equipment safety, an often neglected subject.
A few, mild, criticisms:
A Glossary of Acronyms might have been useful for people new to the field.
Some of the, numerous, figures could use more explanation.
There are some unavoidable glitches in a 730 page book, e.g.: Fade duration equation (bottom of page 108) is missing. Occasional comment (or value) on the wrong page.
However, my general observation is that Mr. Kizer has written an imposing text and I highly recommend it as a professional reference and workbook.

A Wealth of Information

To the best of my knowledge there is no other text that covers so many aspects of digital point to point microwave radio. As one other reviewer noted, this is more of an encyclopedia on microwave radio covering everything from the history of point to point microwave radio to personnel and equipment safety.
If you are developing a new microwave radio route or upgrading existing sites you will find this book invaluable for all of the planning, engineering, and management requirements.

JNC 7? Really?

I bought this book as a suggestion from one of my coworkers. In the very first section, the book uses JNC 7 as a reference for treating HTN. I was hoping this would be at least up to date, now I'm wondering why I spent money at all.

After going through this book more, I've found more errors. Don't waste your time with this study book.

Bought this for the NAPLEX coming up this week, and so far I've found several errors in the book and practice questions. several questions in the practice exam were missing charts or graphs that should go along with the questions. The tables weren't super complete either, a lot of them were missinog MOAs or drug class that they belonged to.

This could very well be the worst review book i have ever looked at. tons of huge useless charts, there are much better ways to review for naplex than this book. My school forced me to buy this book for 400$, I ended up selling it a week later on amazon for 30 bucks. I forked over the extra money and bought RXprep which was worlds better than this book. I have no idea how anyone rated this thing so highly, my guess is that they are Kaplan bots. but seriously, this book sucks..big time

Cohen is probably best known as the writer of the lyrics for the song "Suzanne," made famous by Judy Collins, but has written a great many other songs, too, as well as poetry and prose poetry not set to music. In reading through this generous selection, one often hears the ghost of musical accompaniment, and sometimes its actual presence is missed. The writing alone, forthright in its rhythms, plain of speech, often rhymed, and almost immediately accessible, seems well suited to the ears of a live audience. So fans of the songs will be in luck, here; but readers who prefer slow subtleties, or a kind of poetry that gradually expands in meaning on rereading, or ambitious craft, won't find it in a piece like "For Anne," which begins "With Annie gone, / Whose eyes to compare / With the morning sun?" Cohen's writing is oral in flavor, and asks us to "read" it mainly by hearing it. This works to the disadvantage of a book, where words stay put and aren't sung.

To appreciate these poems, we must suspend any notions of poetry as an intellectual art form and approach this work as one would a rack of greeting cards. Rhyme abounds, frankly showing Cohen at his best because it holds his didactic nature in check. Although there are few surprises, such as the wonderful early poem "Beneath My Hands," the songs from Cohen's first album, written over 30 years ago, are still his finest displays of outrageous yet stunning imagery. The presence of woman as lover, prostitute, or slave, celebrated in these early songs, continues into his latest work, making over 400 pages seem remarkably flimsy. That these women never seem to exist as individuals will possibly offend readers with a feminist bent. Yet despite almost pornographic descriptions, this Jewish poet still will not write outG-d's name. The Buddhist element in his 1984 poetry collection, Book of Mercy , is now scarcely evident. Despite its flaws, this book is recommended for popular collections.

Cohen is known best as a songwriter--everyone's heard "Suzanne"--and a performer, but he is also a poet with eight collections to his credit. This fine volume brings together a great number of Cohen's striking poems and memorable song lyrics from 1956 to the present, including lyrics from his newest album, The Future, which is one his most powerful and exciting releases. Reading Cohen is just as pleasurable as listening to him, especially since his writing has an aural energy. Cohen is direct and precise, a no-fuss-no-muss sort of poet who gets the maximum meaning out of homey words and an invigorating jolt out of clashing images. By turns caustic and charming, Cohen is often caught between the magnetic poles of love and art, claiming in an early poem, "The reason I write/is to make something/as beautiful as you are." He's too experienced to be truly romantic, but he still longs for innocence and purity and frequently writes about faith and redemption. Politics creep in when Cohen muses over class differences and war, but he most often focuses on the subtle palette of emotions from loneliness to passion, bitter humor to serenity. Donna Seaman

Need to search for items better next time

Received the hardback when I was trying to find the paperback version. Still made a great gift though for a friend who was in the hospital at the time. I've bought and lost two copies of this book now myself now but oh well. Having discovered his work long ago in high school, I didn't stumble across this book till shortly after my college graduation. I'm glad I did.
Anyone looking to explore L. Cohen's work though cannot go wrong starting with this book. It covers the man's best known material and dozens of lesser known works as well. There is a variety of subject matters, tones, and even moods covered in Leonard Cohen's work. I would dare say there is probably something here for everyone. Really good way to expand one's knowledge of what "poetry" and "spoken word" is capable of being (and should be) for the reader, the writer, and the speaker.

Fantastic Collection & Perfect 1st Cohen Book to Buy

One of my top gift items: Turn people on to this book. It is a terrific, full anthology that includes much out-of-print material. The poetry is stylistically wide in scope (from how-did-he-do that perfect to sparse, intense, free-verse); it has unique, emotionally-driven language choices, rhythm and content. Its tenor is lugubrious, and its subject matter tends toward sex and religion.

This, as opposed to his individual books of poetry: The individual books are typically short and some are wonderful -- each is very different, thus liked by different tastes. If you don't own any Cohen books, buy this first -- it's got great poems (plus clips of prose, as from "Beautiful Losers"). The chapters are laid out by book and album title (lyrics are here, too); therefore, if/when you want another book after, you will know which one. One thing I don't like about it is the change in poem titles from their originals.

This books ends when Cohen is in his 50's, at least in the previously unpublished poems at the end -- so, before the monastery part of his life, though religion is well part of him (he is Orthodox Jewish and views his Buddhism as compatible with his Judaism). I'm not much a fan of his post-monastery work, and if I have one regret it's that I discovered Leonard Cohen within the past ten years, and never got to see him live.

Know, too, that Cohen was a published poet--well-known in Canada--before he recorded music. He began to play guitar while reading poetry -- it went over well!

I had a high school friend call me in my 30s. Hadn't been in touch for years. She said, plaintively,
"Hi, I just had to talk to someone who knew who Leonard Cohen was." :> Maybe they are easier to
find now. That was in the 1980s.

He's a remarkable man and his poems and songs are very dip-in-able, again and again.
It is inspiring that he can trust his pen, his paper and his heart/mind to just lay it out there.

An excellent book with only one major flaw

Managing Cybersecurity Resources (MCR) is an excellent book. I devoured it in one sitting on a weather-extended flight from Washington-Dulles to Boston. MCR teaches security professionals how to think properly about making security resource allocation decisions by properly defining terms, concepts, and models. The only problem I have with MCR is the reason I subtracted one star: its recommended strategy, cost-benefit analysis, relies upon estimated probabilities of loss and cost savings that are unavailable to practically every security manager. Without these figures, constructing cost-benefit equations as recommended by MCR is impossible in practice. Nevertheless, I still strongly recommend reading this unique and powerful book.

My favorite aspect of MCR is its explanation of economics and finance terms to the security audience. I felt like applauding when I read on p 47 "[M]any managers... are merely calling the IRR an ROI or ROSI (return on security investment). Given that the concepts of "return on investment" and "internal rate of return" are well established in the accounting, finance, and economics literature, as well as among nearly all senior financial managers (e.g., CFOs), security managers should be careful how they use these terms. Indeed, misusing these terms can only lead to problems for the security manager." (See p 45 for a comparison of ROI, IRR, and NPV.)

In a similar fashion, MCR explains what a "return" is for security on p 21: "The benefits associated with cybersecurity activities are derived from the cost savings (often called cost avoidance) that result from preventing cybersecurity breaches. These benefits are difficult, and often impossible, to predict with any degree of accuracy. Moreover, since the actual benefits are conceptually the cost savings associated with potential security breaches that did not occur, it is not possible to measure these benefits precisely after the security investments are made."

What of "investment"? Pp 28-30 say: "[O]rganizations tend to treat the bulk of their cybersecurity expenditures as operating costs and charge them to the period in which they are incurred," unlike capital investments, which "represent assets of an organization that should appear on the organization's balance sheet." The authors recommend us to "view all costs related to cybersecurity activities... as capital investments with varying time horizons."

So what is a cost? P 5 says "The cost of information security is essentially a negative network externality associated with the Internet... [It] arises when malevolent individuals and organizations [which the authors properly label "threats" on p 12] join the network, thereby imposing costs on all well-intentioned users. These costs take the form of losses caused by actual security breaches plus the cost of actions... designed to prevent such breaches."

P 30 wisely states "[N]o amount of security can guarantee that breaches will not occur... The goal of the organization should be to implement security procedures up to the point where the benefits minus the costs are at a maximum." The footnote on p 31 continues with "An alternative way to view this discussion is to think of the goal as one of trying to minimize the sum of the costs associated with cybersecurity activities and the costs associated with breaches... the optimal level of cybersecurity for an organization would be the same under the cost minimization goal as it would be if the organization were to maximize the net benefits." I think most managers prefer to think in terms of cost minimization, which is a prevalent throughout IT.

Costs are dissected on pp 56-58: "The direct costs of cybersecurity breaches are those costs that can be clearly linked to specific breaches... the indirect costs of cybersecurity breaches cannot be linked... Explicit costs of cybersecurity breaches are those costs of breaches that can be measured in an unambiguous manner... implicit costs are opportunity costs (i.e., costs associated with lost opportunities), which cannot be measured without ambiguity... the benefits derived from spending funds on cybersecurity activities come largely from the cost savings derived by avoiding the implicit costs of breaches."

Page 63 explains why companies have "Chief Privacy Officers" and the like, even though preserving privacy is the confidentiality aspect of the CIA triad and could be a CISO responsibility: "The findings from our study show that, on average, information breaches that compromise confidentiality do have a significant negative impact on the stock market value of corporations experiencing breaches. Indeed, the average decline in the firm's stock market value... was approximately 5 percent."

So far so good, right? The major flaw with MCR arrives in ch 4, on p 68: "The variables affecting potential cost savings include (1) the potential losses associated with information security breaches, (2) the probability that a particular breach will occur, and (3) the productivity associated with specific investments, which translates into a reduction in the probability of potential losses." This is true -- but this is the key problem: devising even rough estimates of 1, 2, and 3 is nearly impossible in practice. The authors' examples (see figure 4-2 for one) assume these factors can be determined (like $10 mil total potential loss without countermeasures, 75% probability of loss with no countermeasures / 50% with $650,000 of countermeasures, and so on). When I saw these contrived examples I wondered "what is the origin of these figures?" The fact of the matter is that they are all guesswork, which means the calculator can say anything the analyst wishes to produce.

In some sense we are back to square one, although much better educated in economics. (Note that Andy Jaquith's book Security Metrics also observes how calculating these figures is nearly impossible in real life.)

Because MCR is so right in all of its other discussions, the book deserves 4 stars. A proper acceptance of the difficulty or impossibility of determining 1, 2, and 3 might have resulted in 5 stars. Perhaps a second edition will address these concerns?

PS: I would be remiss to not quote the authors' exceptional insights into the problems with security auditing. P 132 says "[T]he checklist approach tends to shift attention away from the cost-benefit aspects of such security. That is, the checklist approach usually assumes that conducting a particular procedure is inherently worth doing." P 137 hits the nail on the head: "[F]or some firms, it is quite possible that the costs of cybersecurity auditing will exceed the benefits. If this were to occur, then cybersecurity auditing would in effect decrease the firm's value." Amen.

An excellent economic analysis of cybersecurity investments

This book is very timely and extremely useful as a tool for key decision-makers in organizations - Chief Technology Offiers, Information System Managers, and general managers, including CEOs, as well as academics. How do you allocate scarce resources to increasing cybersecurity, in the context of other competing claims ? Professors Gordon and Loeb provide a solid economic framework to do this. They bring their decades of experience researching and teaching about a cost-benefit approach to managerial decisions to the table, in the context of cybersecurity investments.

What I like about the book is its appeal to practitioners and academics alike. There is a nice section on developing a business case for cybersecurity investments. Empirical evidence to support their arguments are provided throughout the book. Complex ideas like real options and cybersecurity investments are nicely explained with simple and insightful examples.

Overall, whether you are a manager making or evaluating the case for cybersecurity investments, or teaching in this area, this book is a must-read.

Managing Cybersecurity Resources: A Cost-Benefit Analysis is excellent! Information security practitioners will appreciate the insightful economic analysis on how to determine the right amount to spend on cybersecurity projects and how to prepare a business case to justify such projects. I especially liked the chapter on risk that included perspectives and analysis not found in any other information security books. The book discusses many topics (for example, economics of cybersecurity and its role in national security) in a manner that novice and expert alike will find appealing. Its clear that the authors, chaired professors from a top business school and pioneers in cybersecurity economics, have a strong understanding of the security environment along with great technical skills. Of more importance, is their intuitive understanding of problems in the cybersecurity trenches. Policy makers, CISOs, CFOs, and managers at all levels, should find enormous value in this book. While at times I wish the authors would not have condensed their discussion, the good news is that they have left some important issues for a follow-up book. I am recommending this book to co-workers and friends.
