About the Author
Sir Charles George Douglas Roberts, KCMG, FRSC (January 10, 1860 – November 26, 1943) was a Canadian poet and prose writer who is known as the Father of Canadian Poetry. Paul Bransom (1885–1979) was an illustrator of animals. Born in Washington, D.C., he began his career as a technical draftsman and comic strip artist.

A Walk in the Woods?

This exceptional collection of short-stories by Canadian poet Charles G D Roberts was published in 1914 and was part of his huge body of work. Often considered the Father of Canadian Poetry he was best known for his short fiction on animals and nature. In Hoof and Claw we find 14 stories, mostly about animals and people who live and work in the back country of Canada. Being something of an armature naturalist who's training stemmed from his experiences growing up in the far north, Roberts gives you an intimate view of the creatures he wrights about. Arctic Fox, Bald Eagle, Mink, Canadian Lynx and the Great Gray Owl are just some of the "wild brethren" in his stories. A stand-out for me was the story about a young girl trying to get home to her family in the back woods and being stalked by a starving Black Bear. Another relates the adventures of a bi-plane pilot who runs afoul of some Bald Eagles defending their territories from this strange invader. The story about the problems caused by fishermen's basket filled with just-caught fish is amusing and probably stemmed from one of the authors personal experiences. Roberts writing is, well, poetic and in the flowery style prevalent at the turn of the 20th Century. He endows his animals with some human characteristics that border on anthropomorphism, but he gets his point across. Sometimes that's the only way an author can explain what's going on in the animal-character's mind during the story. Recently Robert Bakker used the same technic in his novel Raptor Red. While I had no technical or formatting problems with this "free" Kindle edition there were a few issues I didn't like: for one thing there was no Table of Contents and another is the fine paintings by Paul Bransom, that graced the original hard-bound edition, are missing. I guess that's what you get when you opt for the "free" edition. Kindle does offer other editions of this book that do have a charge. With those you would probably get the TOC and maybe the illustrations as well. As I read the book I kept track of the story titles and their locations #s for future reference. I have posted the TOC in the comments. All in all this was an entertaining read and a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane.

A beautifully written collection of nature-themed short stories

This is a collection of short stories focused on nature, animal and human interaction and animal-animal interaction.
Due to the era in which it was written, some of the stories seem a little barbaric in their portrayal of man, which is appropriate for the time but may disturb some readers today. The author was well known at the time for his poetry and each story is beautifully crafted and just wonderful reading. If you are an outdoors person or love nature/animals, or simply appreciate beautiful descriptive writing then this is for you.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Neptune but were afraid to ask

[NOTE:--To get the most out of this book requires at least a rudimentary knowledge of astrology. This need not be extensive, but should include knowing Neptune's sign and house position in your natal chart, any aspects between Neptune and the other planets as well as where he currently resides in sign and house placement by transit. A transit, for those of you unfamiliar with the term, refers to the current zodiacal location of a planet or other cosmic entity, including any aspects it forms to a planet in your natal or some other astrological chart, of which there are too many to get into here. You can obtain this information for free from astro.com. Once you have that, you're all set to apply the information Forrest has provided in this outstanding book. If you'd like to learn astrology's basics, I recommend my own book, "Whobeda's Guide to Basic Astrology", which contains what I would have liked to have found when I was first learning about this ancient discipline.]

Prior to Neptune swamping me with other-worldly, space cadet ditziness, I'd been an organized, disciplined, responsible, hardworking person. Now I couldn't stay focused to the point that if I hadn't realized it was Neptune, I would have been deeply concerned that I was developing Alzheimer's. I kid you not. As the cosmic surfactant, Neptune tends to dissolve what he touches, and I believe that includes your brain. Not surprisingly, the god of the deep is associated with loss, disappearances, deception, psychic phenomena and abilities, spiritual experiences such as enlightenment and so forth.

To sum it up, Neptune left me in a state best described by WTF? I advise my clients that there's always a positive side to any transit, no matter how grueling, but I was having serious difficulty finding anything about this one that was useful. The usual approach with a transit is to identify it, then direct that energy to something productive, yet I had never been less productive, more confused and generally feeling as if I were adrift in the ocean with no land in sight. I had never felt so lost.

Then I was fortunate enough to get a copy of Forrest's book and I must say that he nailed it. He starts out by explaining Neptune's realm, on the edge of the solar system, beyond which lie Pluto, Eris and possibly other planets or minor planets, the domain of comets and then interstellar space. It's an area filled with mystery and the unknown, so it's no wonder it's unfamiliar to someone who's practical, logical and responsible by nature.

In describing Neptune's effect when connected with the other planets, Forrest provides both the "Light Side" and the "Dark Side." This is tremendously helpful because sometimes with Neptune it's not easy to tell which is which. For the twelve houses, he provides snapshots which include an overview, significant quote and a sentence or two regarding "Leaking Energy" as a preface to several pages of in-depth explanation. This is particularly helpful if you're desperate, as I was, so you can grab the highlights before diving into the book as a whole. He discusses loss, often experienced during a Neptune transit, as well as navigating those murky waters in a positive way. He talks about synchronicity, which is typically ramped up during this time, both of a favorable and less favorable nature. His section on how the zodiac sign Neptune resided in influenced the music for different eras is fascinating, as is his journey through history, recounting key events that occurred when Neptune was previously in his home sign of Pisces, as he is now.

If you feel as if you've lost your footing, are sinking in quicksand or adrift on a large body of water with no land in sight, there's a good chance that Neptune is involved. If that's the case, I can't recommend this book highly enough. The price is a far cry less than a psychologist, especially one who doesn't augment his or her practice with astrology. It has not only provided me with the answers I was looking for, but made me a better astrologer who can be more helpful to any of my clients going through Neptune's often dark and mysterious waters.

It has been decided to publish the book in two vols. The first vol. deals with the history of the numeral notations and of arithmetic. The second vol. is devoted to algebra, a science in which the ancient Hindus made remarkable progress.



Vol. I contains two chapters. Chapter 1 gives account of various devices employed by the Hindus for denoting numbers. Chapter 2 deals with arithmetic in general.



Vol. II of this work devoted to the history of Algebra in India. The use of symbols-letters of the alphabet to denote unknowns-and equations are the foundation of thwe of the algebra. The Hindus were the first to make systematic use of the letters of the alphabet to denote unknowns.

Best History of Hindu Mathematics

Inexpensive but comprehensive two-volume set. Covers the history of Hindu mathematics far more comprehensively than any other source I've found. Well written, doesn't suffer from the language and printing errors ocasionally seen in older Indian mathematics publications. The Chakravala algorithm and its relationship to continued fractions is presented particularly well with excellent detail. Recommended.

A rare book from India

An amazing book. Looking at India today, it is almost unbelievable that Hindus were so far advanced so many centuries before the rest of the world. Bibhutibhushan was born in Chittagong district of Bengal in Undivided India in a very poor family living below the poverty line. His book is now considered as a source book on ancient Indian mathematics. He became Professor of Applied mathematics in Calcutta University in 1930s. At the end of that decade he renounced the world and became Adwaitabadi (Unitary conception of God in Hindu religion) Sanyasi and spent rest of his life writing several volumes on Hindu relligion.
