Sexy, sassy Ms Remy at her best!!!

This is the third novel I've read by Carole Remy and it's my favourite! Whilst I loved the sweet wickedness of Twelve Nights and the saucy encounters of Who is Candid?, Beauty of the Beast has totally charmed me.
The plot and characters are darker and more intense than Lucy and Dick (Who is Candid?) and Aggie and Jimmy (Twelve Nights). I loved those characters but Mary Jane and George come from a different world and a different time.
In Beauty of the Beast we get a glimpse into the SM scene of 1950s America through a tale which is expertly weaved around the ideology of the fairy-tale. Beauty is explored on different levels, as is the concept of the beast and how we, as humans, often conceal our true selves.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a full moral lesson disguised as a novel! It is a thoroughly enjoyable read and the heroine, Mary Jane, is sexy, sassy and independent with a wicked sense of humour. The first two pages had me laughing until my sides ached and Ms Remy weaves this heady mix of humour and darker desires with the skill of a truly talented author. She encapsulates how complex we all are and delves into the idea that we all are multi-faceted.
Beauty of the Beast is a love story, it is erotic, it is an extended metaphor. There is a mystery, there is a tale of growing obsession and there is a clear picture of how insanity is just a step away if you allow your cravings to completely consume you.
My favourite line of the novel had to be ...the age old rhythm we are born to know... You'll have to read it to know what I'm talking about! ;-)
Ms Remy perfectly captures our more basic instincts and delivers them in her uniquely direct and delicious style.

Hot as Texas!

Beauty of the Beast is my first look at Erotica since I was a teenager doing a little wide-eyed exploring on my own with a paperback and a flashlight under the covers. That was a while ago! Beauty is a quick paced, spice laden romp set in 1950's Texas where the genteel manners of the south contrast with the real sexual action hidden behind thick walls and moneyed social structure.

Mary Jane Andrews is a brave, spirited reporter, as smart as she is impulsive, who is determined to get the story about a secretive sex house near Austin without fully understanding the price she will pay for her ambition. In and out of trouble, actually, in and out of a LOT of things, Mary Jane ends up with a lot more than a story.

This book is a delightful erotic ride. Funny, explicit, definitely arousing, yet with a endearing sense of playful abandon that is quite engaging. If you like to lose yourself in some zesty fantasy, this is the book for you!

Smoking Hot Read!

Carole Remy is my hero. She never fails to leave me breathless and filled with longing. Now I want to go and hang out at an S&M club. *sigh* Her characters rock and you can feel every nuance of emotion ricocheting around in Mary Jane's head. From the irritation of her male dominated work situation to the harrowing experiences as she undertakes an adventure that would leave most of us shaking in our designer pumps.

I am still reading this jewel and am loving every second of it! Carol you have outdone yourself with this wonderful book. Now, I am going to go and refill my ice water (again) and go back to my e-reader. Sexy, hot and tons of fun, this read has made my vacation and I think I may just run out of ice. lol.

5/5 for sheer hotness and not wanting to ever sleep when there's a new Remy in the house. Woot! :)

A Truly Great Challenge

I cannot think of a greater challenge to organizations today than to find, hire, and then keep peak performers. This is one of two books which I have just read. Both suggest excellent strategies and tactics to meet this challenge. (The other is authored by Harry E. Chambers.) But what if an organization now has few -- if -- any peak performers? Obviously, it must develop them. How? In Hidden Value, O'Reilly and Pfeffer explain how great companies achieve extraordinary results with ordinary people.
You can also hire them. In my opinion, one with which Arthur may agree, organizations must be constantly, indeed aggressively involved in recruiting all the time. That is to say, at least decision-makers must be identifying "the best and the brightest" workers employed elsewhere. Perhaps there is no need for them now. Even so, it is important to know who they are, to establish contact with them, and then stay in touch. One CEO I know has a simple but very effective strategy. Whenever she encounters someone who makes a highly favorable impression on her, she offers her business card. "I know you are very happy where you are now. That's great. And frankly, we do not have a suitable position available at the moment anyway. However, if you ever think about making a change, please give me a call. I'd really like to hear from you." Perhaps 18-24 months later, that person calls her.
Arthur organizes her material within 11 chapters, ending each with a summary of key points. She then provides two especially informative appendices: "Employee Benefits Glossary" and "Legal Issues." Her advice on using an outside source (e.g. an executive recruitment firm) to help generate and screen candidates will be most beneficial to larger organizations. However, almost all of the other material will be of substantial assistance to any organization, regardless of its size or nature. All by itself, Chapter 6 is worth the cost of the book. In it, Arthur offers a wealth of suggestions concerning competency-based recruiting and interviewing, correctly stressing the importance of first establishing a solid pre-recruitment foundation, one which takes into account questions such as these which anyone involved in the interview process should be prepared to answer fully:
1. Am I thoroughly familiar with the qualities being sought in an applicant?
2. Are these qualities both job-related and realistic?
3. Can I clearly communicate the duties and responsibilities of this position to applicants?
4. Am I prepared to provide additional relevant information about the job and the company to the applicant?
In other words, whenever a position becomes available, take full advantage that opportunity (a) to determine whether or not it should be filled and (b) if it must be filled, to identify job-specific competencies (prior to recruitment) and other factors which are necessary for success. In Chapter 7, Arthur includes Exhibit 8-1 which lists and briefly discusses "Reasons for High Turnover." For those organizations which have a problem with employee attrition, Arthur suggests a number of probable causes. In fact, I think all of the "exhibits" are informative, as with chapter summaries helping the reader to focus on key points which can easily be reviewed later. I also highly recommend Exhibit 11-1 in the final chapter which lists and briefly discusses 20 "Future Job Projections"; Arthur also includes Web sites which offer additional information about each, such as "workplace concierge" and "corporate anthropologist." Good stuff indeed.
Arthur's expert guidance can help any organization to formulate or refine a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective system by which to recruit and then retain the people it needs. Obviously, I think highly of her book. However, given the importance of the issues it addresses as well as the serious implications of decisions which must be made, I strongly recommend that several different sources (including hers) be consulted. Good Material; Needs to be Update

I selected this book to use in an academic setting, teaching
a student about Recruitment and Retention. The categories in this
book are right on target. The problem is the copyright date - 2001.
If I had it to do over I would not have selected this book ONLY because
sections of it are outdated.
The chapter on Electronic Recruiting is showing its 10 year age. My suggestion:
update the book including a major rework of Internet and electronic references. This handbok should be revised every three years.

Starting a new job can be intimidating for most people but a new opportunity in becoming successful in their life. In order to accomplish success, people will need to prove to the Employer that their definitely the perfect candidate for the position for which their applying for. Many people compete for the same occupation which will make the chances limited for an individual. In order to be given a chance people must convene their standards in having the experience and degree for the job title. According to the chapters, I read there is an importance in the following qualities that is most important characteristics' of being a good employee are being able to listen and follow commands, being dependable. Employer's look for that dependable person that will bring gains and fresh new ideas to the table.

To become a good employee means being able to listen and follow commands given by the Employer. This is an important quality because it shows respect to the Employer. Listening and following orders will reduce mistakes and prevent accidents. For example, the boss asks to complete a power point presentation for the President of the company because he/she needs to make sure the company is successful and that the employees' do their job accurately. Imagine the employee presented the wrong issue and didn't listen and follow instructions as was told by the Employer, it can lead to getting fired. It will show the employee is not focusing and have a high risk of misplacing any important document that may be classified. Also, could cause a huge dilemma between the Employer and the President of the company which supposedly all are representing. An employee must be patient and listen to the Employer without any interruptions and undivided attention. Communication is needed between both the employee and Employer in order to prevent accidents.

Another important characteristic of becoming a good employee is being dependable. The Employer appreciates when an employee's devoted to their job without them having to look over their shoulders constantly. Showing initiative puts the Employer at ease because the employee has the ability to act on their own For example, make decisions without the help or advice of other people, unless needed approval from the boss. Improving things at work will just be a positive approach. To be more efficient will demonstrate that a person's an excellent employee. In any event, this is a fantastic and inspiring book for all woodworkers. In a word, unique! This is perhaps the best way of describing the contents of this book. Author Kape has a great imagination and it is well projected in this fabulous book. There are, as the cover suggests, 15 one-of-a-kind projects for the scroll saw. There is a classic and two neo-classic sets that are close to traditional but certainly unique as cut with the scrollsaw. There is also a set reminiscent of the Knights of the Round Table, a classic Greek set, a Czarist set and an Olde English set. Add these to the architectural collection like Paris, Canterbury, Venice, Rome and San Francisco and you have a fully rounded out chess set collection that is to die for. Now, if you were counting you will realize that the list is short by four. These are made up by the author's plans for a chess board, a travelling chess board, a storage box and a vertical wall mounted chess set. Kape provides the sawyer with full plans and scale drawings for all of the above as well as a full list of materials. Making Wooden Chess sets

I ordered this book for my husband who does all the scroll sawing in the house because he had seen in a magazine a pattern for a chess set. He decided he wanted to try making one for himself, but the set in the magazine was a little more difficult for his level of expertise, so he wanted to try a simpler one. When we got the book, very speedy shipping by the way, he immeadiately went to town cutting some pieces out. He found the instructions with many pictures VERY helpful in learning how to cut the compound cuts needed to make each piece. Needless to say, he had made his own chess set in a couple of weeks and is now working on several more! I would definately recommend this book to someone who is interesterd in learning a new technique on the scroll saw.

I found this book to be excellent. The paterns are complex and the hints for the builder are also good. Building the chess pieces,however, is not at all easy when using one and a half inch wood.

Ive been wanting a quality chess set for some time , but good sets are like 3-4 hundred
with a wood board - I believe I can make a simalar quality set with board using this book .

where's his Nobel Prize?

Obi Okonkwo, grandson of the protagonist in Things Fall Apart, is the pride of his Nigerian village, Umuofia. The Ibo villagers pooled their money to send one native son off to England to be educated and Obi was chosen. Now he has returned to a prestigious job with the civil service in Lagos--he's the Administrative Assistant to the Inspector of Schools. He bears the burden of his people's expectations but his exposure to Western culture has distanced him from tribal life and though he is now earning a magnificent living by their standards, he has trouble making ends meet as he tries keeping up with the Joneses in the big city. Borrowing money, he ends up "digging a new pit to fill up an old one." Further complicating matters is his love affair with the lovely Clara, an osu, one of the socio-religious outcasts who also figured prominently in Things Fall Apart.
As financial and romantic pressures continue to mount and his beloved mother sickens and dies, Obi must also deal with temptation, offers of money and sex if he will use his position to assist scholarship applicants. For as long as he can, Obi juggles all of these problems, but gradually they come crashing down on him.
More directly than almost any author I'm aware of, Chinua Achebe faces head on the issues which confront the developing nations in a post-Colonial world. In No Longer At Ease, even as he pokes fun at the remaining English bureaucrats and their condescending ways, he honors their tradition of relatively honest civil service. Meanwhile, he questions whether at least this first generation of natives who are replacing the departing Europeans are truly prepared to meet the same standards or whether a slide into corruption is nearly inevitable.
Obi is a decent enough man and he has the best of intentions, but he gets in way over his head, bringing tragedy down upon himself and disgrace to his village. His situation, as portrayed by Achebe--caught between the traditions and expectations of his village on the one hand and the modern ways and legal constraints of the West on the other--puts him in an untenable position, one where something must give. The title of the book comes from T. S. Eliots's The Journey of the Magi :
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms, But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation, With an alien people clutching their gods. I should be glad of another death.
Achebe offers a fully realized portrait of one of those returned who are "no longer at ease," aliens in their own country. It's a terrific book.

He gives us a view of how our ideals contrast with how we really live and exist in reality. The point of this book can be best summed up by Achebe's own words. He states, "The impatient idealist says: 'Give me a place to stand and I shall move the earth.' But such a place does not exist. We all have to stand on the earth itself and go with her at her pace." This book while centered mainly on the African identity crisis, gives a broad understanding of issues of right and wrong and moral consequences of individualism.

OUTSTANDING SEQUEL, VERY SENSITIVE INSIGHTS

No Longer at Ease, in my opinion, is actually a better book than Things Fall Apart. Achebe does a masterful job of depicting the experience of an ex-patriate returning home after many years abroad. Such experience is universal, not confined to Nigeria or the main character Obi Okonkwo (grandson of the main character in Things Fall Apart).
In adition to the ex-pat experience, Achebe inserts the peculiarly Nigerian experience, in which a group of British still retained some of the leadership positions in civil service while native Nigerians were mostly focused on politics. The moral aspect is also noteworthy, as the widely accepted corruption and favouring done by Nigerians in power was not mirrored by the British.
Aside from the socio-historical aspect of the novel, Achebe is very sensitive in showing the downward spiral of young Obi, as he tries to fight against strong unreasonable traditions (such as with his girlfriend who is of a banished caste). Obi gets enmeshed in a vicious cycle in which he needs to show success, to a point in which his salary can longer sustain his lifestyle, which is forced upon him by expectations.
I highly recommend this book, especially to ex-pats of any nation. As an ex-pat returned home myself, I feel many of the same difficulties Obi did. Obi's anguish and pain are crystal clear, and any ex-pat will relate.

When Pope John Paul II called for a massive "new evangelization" of Asia during a November 1999 visit to India, his comments sparked protest from Hindus for whom proselytizing is a form of oppression. The debate underscored the sharp difference between Western creeds such as Christianity and Islam, which tend to be exclusive, and Eastern religions that stress pluralism. This collision forms a fascinating story line, and on that basis Zacharias's new work is superficially intriguing. Zacharias, a Christian apologist who grew up in India, does offer the occasional insight into Eastern religions. He claims that despite the current Hollywood romance with Buddhism as a simple faith of compassion, in most forms Buddhism is actually a complex system, featuring 227 disciplinary rules for men and 311 for women. Yet for the most part, Zacharias is in dialogue here not with Eastern religions but with Western skeptics. He seeks to settle old scores with Darwin and Hume, resurrecting tired debates over the nature of evil and the argument from design without adding anything new to the discussion. His theodicy will be convincing only to committed Christians, and his use of scripture is entirely uncritical (he points out grammatical and textual difficulties in the Koran without even mentioning analogous difficulties in the Bible). There are touching flashes of humanity as Zacharias describes suffering people he has encountered, but on the whole he does little to advance inter-religious conversation. (Aug.)

Poorly Titled, Poorly Executed, and Wrongly Advertised

This book failed entirely on almost every level conceivable. From the title and back of the book, one might think it was about comparing other religions to Jesus. Consider the following excerpt from the back of the book: "Jesus Among Other Gods provides the answers to the most fundamental claims about Christianity such as: Aren't all religions fundamentally the same? Was Jesus who He claimed to be? Can one study the life of Christ and demonstrate conclusively that He was and is the way, the truth, and the life? In each chapter, Zacharias considers a unique claim that Jesus made and the contrasts the truth of Jesus with the founders of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism..." What does one think the book will be? An apologetic approach to proving the divinity of Christ and contrasting it with other religions. This book is misadvertised, and calls into question whether or not the writer of the back of the book actually read the book itself. The book is neither a study of comparative religion nor decent apologetics.

What one will find inside is mostly Christian devotionals. Don't get me wrong— from the title, I expected a Christian emphasis— but it is obvious that he never intended to adequately deal with other faiths. On occasion, you will find caricatured versions of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. However, the religions are represented by cherry-picked quotes which Zacharias then rebuts. There is no holistic analysis of the faiths and a comparing and contrasting with the Christian faith: he merely (and very seldom) choses to misrepresent a religion by picking out quotes and rebutting their meaning. However, even mentioning other religions is unscrupulously rare in a book titled Jesus Among Other Gods. As I said above, the VAST majority of the book is Christian devotional material. While the cover and back of the book market it as dealing with comparative religion, the book isn't even structured in a manner that deals with varying faiths. It is focused on dealing with theological questions and how Christianity answers them.

I also claimed the book was not primarily apologetic. There are arguments made on behalf of the Christian faith, but they are far and few between. The material is presented from the vantage point that the reader already accepts Christianity and rejects any other faith, and all arguments are made from this assumption. He even brings up the Scopes Monkey Trial and naturalism in the final chapter and how they deal with the Genesis account, yet never addresses the arguments of naturalism nor offers a defense against it! That is a FATAL flaw in apologetics. The title of the book implies Jesus and his truth and uniqueness will be the central theme of the book, and the book even pretends to be an apologetics text, yet the substance of the arguments is nonexistent.

Nevertheless, there is one (slight) silver lining: he brings up the problem of evil and deals with it quite eloquently. In this chapter, he even brings up and rebuts the views of other faiths (he still caricatures and cherry-picks, but at least he adequately acknowledges alternative religions). This chapter ALMOST made me grant a second star.

Suffice to say, I expected an apologetic defense of the Christian faith against other major worldviews, but all I found were devotionals and half-hearted and inaccurate comparisons . I am truly disappointed with Ravi Zacharias: I love his speeches, yet have yet to find a book by him that is decent.

I like Ravi. He is a sharp dude for sure

I like Ravi. He is a sharp dude for sure. I think his bread and butter though is when he gets in debate mode in regards to Philosophy. I wish there was more of this in the book. It has too much of a "Bible study like book" (biblical interpretation). For sure that is fine, but I can find that anywhere. I wished Ravi would have discussed more arguments in regard to religion and philosophy.
