About the Author

Art Spiegelman is a contributing editor and artist for The New Yorker, and a co-founder/editor of Raw, the acclaimed magazine of avant-garde comics and graphics. His drawings and prints have been exhibited in museums and galleries here and abroad. Honors he has received for Maus include the Pulitzer Prize, a Guggenheim fellowship, and nominations for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He lives in New York City with his wife, Fran�oise Mouly, and their two children, Nadja and Dashiell.

Hardcover Includes Parts I and II

Browsing through the reviews and comments about Maus, I saw that there was some question as to whether the hardcover edition comprised Parts I and II. This is understandable because the product is listed in Amazon as "The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1)," which seems contradictory.

When I was considering purchasing it, I looked at the number of pages that were listed for the edition and guessed that it included both parts of the story. So I bought it, it arrived fine, and I am now writing to confirm that yes, this edition includes I and II.

Amazon should look into this and remove the "(No 1)" from the listing's title.

"Maus": an important literary landmark

Art Spiegelman's "Maus: A Survivor's Tale" is a unique and unforgettable work of literature. This two-volume set of book-length comics (or "graphic novels," if you prefer) tells the story of the narrator, Artie, and his father Vladek, a Holocaust survivor. "Maus" is thus an important example of both Holocaust literature and of the graphic novel. The two volumes of "Maus" are subtitled "My Father Bleeds History" and "And Here My Troubles Began"; they should be read together to get the biggest impact.
Artie is a comic book artist who is trying to create art that is meaningful, not just commercial. As the two volumes of "Maus" unfold, he gradually learns the full story of his father's history as a Jewish survivor of the World War II Holocaust. There is a complex "book within the book" motif, since the main character is actually writing the book that we are reading. This self-referentiality also allows Spiegelman to get in some satiric material.
The distinguishing conceit of "Maus" involves depicting the books' humanoid characters as having animal heads. All the Jews have mice heads, the Germans are cats, the Americans dogs, etc. It is a visually provocative device, although not without problematic aspects. To his credit, Spiegelman addresses some of the ambiguities of this visual device in the course of the 2 volumes. For example, Artie's wife, a Frenchwoman who converted to Judaism, wonders what kind of animal head she should have in the comic.
"Maus" contains some stunning visual touches, as well as some truly painful and thought-provoking dialogue. Vladek is one of the most extraordinary characters in 20th century literature. As grim as the two books' subject matter is, there are some moments of humor and warmth. Overall, "Maus" is a profound reflection on family ties, history, memory, and the role of the artist in society.

This is an excellent graphic novel. I had to read it for a visual communications course in college. It's difficult to get into a graphic novel for me, but it's a good book with lots of symbolism.

Data Driven goes nowhere

I expected great things from a book subtitled "Creating a Data Culture." I hoped to read the vision of two data science leaders and glean insight about team and organizational strategies. What I found instead was an uninspiring account of daily tactics used by data technicians and old examples of the decisions driven by data.

Furthermore, in these examples, they do nothing to support their claim that data had anything to do with the success to which they link it. Grammatically speaking, their paragraph has "no data" to support their broad generalizations. Additionally, in at least one example (GE Aviation), their claim is either false or so vague or poorly communicated as to give it the appearance that it is false: it's their suggestion about the use of GE's jet engine data that fails to meet muster. I can say this as an experimental test pilot, mathematician, engineer, and published industry expert.

Finally, their recommendations for "data processes" fall flat. Their recommendations sound more like tactics, something to add to a daily to-do list than processes. They share their own experience rather than broad, far-reaching advice.

This is an easily consumed paper. It has a solid perspective on how to approach data in the current age. Terms like "big data" get thrown around, but few people can agree what it means. This paper gives some hooks to hang better ideas about data and what it can mean to your organization.

It was basic and easy to read. It did not bridge some gaps on how non-technical people will actually use data. He gives examples where data works but does not where it does not. He implies data is the answer when it has been around forever and is actually just a tool.

Good Read

If you have or are in the process of getting your EE, don't bother with this book. As the title says, it's a "Practical Guide" for folks that either have an interest in the topic or wish to get a bit deeper into the issues involved in wafer and semiconductor manufacturing due to job requirements etc... it is not a text book.
I would have given the book 5 stars except there are several glaring issues with this book. Given the target audience and general education level of its readers, I think some of the issues are inexcusable.
Typos and grammatical errors abound in this book. The Editor at McGraw Hill must have been asleep or been so completely uninterested in the topic that they didn't bother to check. Also, there are issues with decimal point placement throughout the book. It's sufficiently technical that someone should have bothered to verify the figures before publishing. I also would like to have seen higher quality illustrations/pictures and some logic applied to their placement.
This book is due for an update SOON. It positions die shifts to 180 nanometers as an up and coming event. Intel currently has 90 nanometer manufacturing up and running, with products entering the channel in 4Q03. Not to mention, graphics chip companies and their fab partners have made the shift to 130 nanometers. These process and manufacturing changes bring a whole host of new issues, challenges, opportunities and technologies to the mix.
All in all, this is a good book.

[A review of the 5th edition.]

Zant gives an update of his long running book on chip making. It is useful as a quick overview of the salient steps used by many fabs. The text starts with a precis of the industry's history, and, naturally, the seminal and continued significance of Moore's Law.

The wafer fabrication pages describe the predominant Chemical Vapour Deposition method. But the book also finds space for a quick explanation of Molecular Beam Epitaxy. Though the latter is still largely a research method.

Patterning and photolithography are vital processing steps. You should have a solid grasp of these ideas from the relevant chapters. Later steps of layer deposition and metallisation build up the circuit.

A lot of the text is basically unchanged from earlier editions. Since many key ideas have remained constant for decades. Rather, it has been the industry's singular success in applying those ideas to ever greater precision. Hence, the book explains why the decreasing linewidths (now in the deep submicron of around 0.18) and the move to 300mm wafers have kept us moving along Moore's Law.

The book is roughly at an undergraduate level in material science or electrical engineering. [Professionals should seek more detailed texts.]

Great starting point

This book is clear and readable -- not your average text book. I'm making a mid-life career change from architect to patent writer for the semiconductor industry. This book has been invaluable. It's not full of a lot of formulas or theory, but it will definitely help you understand what is involved in manufacturing semiconductor devices. The only things I might ask for are 1)Better Prufreeding, and B) more pictures of the process machinery; there are a few, but the author relies mainly on diagrammatic drawings to illustrate equipment. But, that said, there are a lot of drawings and they are very well drawn (unlike some of the fuzzy drawing representations in Wolf's Vol. 1 of Semiconductor Devices for the VLSI Era. The VanZant book is way cheaper, too).

Clay betrayed Harley and she can't find it within her to believe in him any more. She will use him to get their son back but Jasper is now the only thing that is important to her. Or so she has convinced herself. This does end happily and without a cliffhanger so sit back and enjoy this fabulous end to the disastrous tale that is Harley and Clay's story.

Clay tries to abduct his son away from Haley in order to protect him from the drug dealer Haley had gotten involved with, but instead Jasper is kidnapped by the very man me is trying to protect him from. The rest of this action packed story follows Clay and Haley as they try to save their son. While mostly resolved, the author definitely left room for more.
