A nice book but you cannot learn kanji with this one only!

It's a nice book for a fisrt or different approach to kanji but you cannot use this one only to learn them! It's nice because you have a history about meaning development of the most used and common kanji. There is the kanji stroke order, a history of the graphic evolution too. You can find the On and Kun reading (even if together the english meaning without separated indication) but only on romanji. Not hiragana or katakana, but maybe beacause it assume to explaine Japanese and chinese kanji ... The all kanji sheet it's a little chaotic and not very well organised. A book worth to read for personal curiosity, but not very usefull for a serious study of kanji.

excellent resource

This is an excellent resource for anyone learning Kanji. Much more helpful than anything else I have seen in the last 25 yrs. An excellent format and approach. Looking through it is like having a light going on. The printing was obviously done in the days prior to word processing, but that is a very small distraction. Easy to overlook in order to reap the insights that the author shares after many years of thinking about this subject. I wish there were a second book in the series.

A clear and illuminating explanation of kanji

This and the other books in this series make for a very satisfying read or perusal. Not only does the reader benefit from an understanding of the logic behind each kanji symbol, one develops a better appreciation for the fundamentals of human language and cognition. I found it particularly interesting how the kanji symbols for numbers are shown to correspond to the Arabic/Indian numerals in common use. In reading Dykstra's analysis one gets the impression that certain universal mathematical concepts circled the globe way in advance of Columbus and Magellan!
