4.5 Stars all the way!
By Crystal's Many Reviewers
You know you are reading a good book, when halfway through; you call up your friends and tell them they HAVE to buy the book. That is what happened to me with this book!!! There were parts of it where I was laughing so hard I was almost in tears, and other parts that were so informational, that I actually learned a thing or two!

The characters in this book were written to where they all had completely different personalities. Sami's character shows the sense of innocence that a lot of women have these days but also has her strength that shows through at times. Crash and AJ seem like the typical football player bad-asses, but during the course of the book, you get to learn that there is more to them than meets the eye.

One thing that I completely enjoyed about this book was the fact that you were learning throughout the book. While the characters were going through the BDSM Boot Camp, you were as well. Cassidy didn't skip over details that are important such as the safety during certain scenes. There were also many different techniques that were
explained and demonstrated in this book.

The only thing that I did not like about this book was the "instant love" between Sami, AJ and Crash. Even though they had known each other for over a week, it still seemed as though it was all tied up too nicely at the end. I would have figured there would have been more arguments about the relationship than there were. They all seemed to take it rather in stride.

This is one book that I would recommend to anyone who is interested in the BDSM world. You are able to learn certain things about the lifestyle that might shock you, in a good way.

Love some football players
By KLB
I won this book at RT along with the others in the series. I admit, I jumped right to this one because it had a football field in the background. I really enjoyed this book. It is the most informative BDSM book I've ever read and think a lot of BDSM writers would do good to read this before they begin their next BDSM romance novel. Many BDSM books leave me wanting to punch the Dom in the nose. I did not have this feeling at all with this book.

But I think I was most impressed with the story is it took several people who were curious/interested in BDSM and taught them what they needed to know and thereby doing the same thing for the reader. I also liked the fact that the author, through the characters, made it clear that BDSM is all of what you make of it. And unlike some popular books out there, it is not about coercion, but about mutual respect and trust.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • For readers of The Nightingale and Sarah’s Key, inspired by the life of a real World War II heroine, this remarkable debut novel reveals the power of unsung women to change history in their quest for love, freedom, and second chances.

New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline’s world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in September 1939—and then sets its sights on France.

An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences.

For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power.

The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrck, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents—from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland—as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten.

Chapter 1

Caroline

September 1939

If I’d known I was about to meet the man who’d shatter me like bone china on terra-cotta, I would have slept in. Instead, I roused our florist, Mr. Sitwell, from his bed to make a boutonnire. My first consulate gala was no time to stand on ceremony.

I joined the riptide of the great unwashed moving up Fifth Avenue. Men in gray-felted fedoras pushed by me, the morning papers in their attachs bearing the last benign headlines of the decade. There was no storm gathering in the east that day, no portent of things to come. The only ominous sign from the direction of Europe was the scent of slack water wafting off the East River.

As I neared our building at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Forty-ninth Street, I felt Roger watching from the window above. He’d fired people for a lot less than being twenty minutes late, but the one time of year the New York elite opened their wallets and pretended they cared about France was no time for skimpy boutonnires.

I turned at the corner, the morning sun alive in the gold-leaf letters chiseled in the cornerstone: la maison franaise. The French Building, home to the French Consulate, stood side by side with the British Empire Building, facing Fifth Avenue, part of Rockefeller Center, Junior Rockefeller’s new complex of granite and limestone. Many foreign consulates kept offices there then, resulting in a great stew of international diplomacy.

“All the way to the back and face the front,” said Cuddy, our elevator operator.

Mr. Rockefeller handpicked the elevator boys, screening for manners and good looks. Cuddy was heavy on the looks, though his hair was already salt-and-peppered, his body in a hurry to age.

Cuddy fixed his gaze on the illuminated numbers above the doors. “You got a crowd up there today, Miss Ferriday. Pia said there’s two new boats in.”

“Delightful,” I said.

Cuddy brushed something off the sleeve of his navy-blue uniform jacket. “Another late one tonight?”

For the fastest elevators in the world, ours still took forever. “I’ll be gone by five. Gala tonight.”

I loved my job. Grandmother Woolsey had started the work tradition in our family, nursing soldiers on the battlefield at Gettysburg. But my volunteer post as head of family assistance for the French Consulate wasn’t work really. Loving all things French was simply genetic for me. My father may have been half-Irish, but his heart belonged to France. Plus, Mother had inherited an apartment in Paris, where we spent every August, so I felt at home there.

The elevator stopped. Even through the closed doors, we could hear a terrific din of raised voices. A shiver ran through me.

“Third floor,” Cuddy called out. “French Consulate. Watch your—”

Once the doors parted, the noise overpowered all polite speech. The hallway outside our reception area was packed so tightly with people one could scarcely step through. Both the Normandie and the Ile de France, two of France’s premier ocean liners, had landed that morning in New York Harbor, packed with wealthy passengers fleeing the uncertainty in France. Once the all-clear horn signaled and they were free to disembark, the ships’ elite streamed to the consulate to iron out visa problems and other sticky issues.

I squeezed into the smoky reception area, past ladies in Paris’s newest day dresses who stood gossiping in a lovely cloud of Arpge, the sea spray still in their hair. The people in this group were accustomed to being shadowed by a butler with a crystal ashtray and a champagne flute. Bellboys in scarlet jackets from the Normandie went toe-to-toe with their black-jacketed counterparts from the Ile de France. I wedged one shoulder through the crowd, toward our secretary’s desk at the back of the room, and my chiffon scarf snagged on the clasp of one ravishing creature’s pearls. As I worked to extract it, the intercom buzzed unanswered.

Roger.

I pressed on through, felt a pat on my behind, and turned to see a midshipman flash a plaquey smile.

“Gardons nos mains pour nous-mmes,” I said. Let’s keep our hands to ourselves.

The boy raised his arm above the crowd and dangled his Normandie stateroom key. At least he wasn’t the over-sixty type I usually attracted.

I made it to our secretary’s desk, where she sat, head down, typing.

“Bonjour, Pia.”

Roger’s cousin, a sloe-eyed boy of eighteen, was sitting on Pia’s desk, legs crossed. He held his cigarette in the air as he picked through a box of chocolates, Pia’s favorite breakfast. My inbox on her desk was already stacked with case folders.

“Vraiment? What is so good about it?” she said, not lifting her head.

Pia was much more than a secretary. We all wore many hats, and hers included signing in new clients and establishing a folder for each, typing up Roger’s considerable correspondence, and deciphering the massive flood of daily Morse-code pulses that was the lifeblood of our office.

“Why is it so hot in here?” I said. “The phone is ringing, Pia.”

She plucked a chocolate from the box. “It keeps doing that.”

Pia attracted beaux as if she emitted a frequency only males could detect. She was attractive in a feral way, but I suspected her popularity was due in part to her tight sweaters.

“Can you take some of my cases today, Pia?”

“Roger says I can’t leave this chair.” She broke the shell of the chocolate’s underside with her manicured thumb, stalking the strawberry crmes. “He also wants to see you right away, but I think the woman on the sofa slept in the hallway last night.” Pia flapped one half of a one-hundred-dollar bill at me. “And the fatty with the dogs says he’ll give you the other half if you take him first.” She nodded toward the well-fed older couple near my office door, each holding a brace of gray-muzzled dachshunds.

Like Pia’s, my job description was wide-ranging. It included attending to the needs of French citizens here in New York—often families fallen on hard times—and overseeing my French Families Fund, a charity effort through which I sent comfort boxes to French orphans overseas. I’d just retired from an almost two-decade-long stint on Broadway, and this felt easy by comparison. It certainly involved less unpacking of trunks.

My boss, Roger Fortier, appeared in his office doorway.

“Caroline, I need you now. Bonnet’s canceled.”

“You can’t be serious, Roger.” The news came like a punch. I’d secured the French foreign minister as our gala keynote speaker months before.

“It’s not easy being the French foreign minister right now,” he called over his shoulder as he went back inside.

I stepped into my office and flipped through the Wheeldex on my desk. Was Mother’s Buddhist-monk friend Ajahn Chah free that night?

“Caroline—” Roger called. I grabbed my Wheeldex and hurried to his office, avoiding the couple with the dachshunds, who were trying their best to look tragic.

“Why were you late this morning?” Roger asked. “Pia’s been here for two hours already.”

As consul general, Roger Fortier ruled from the corner suite with its commanding view of Rockefeller Plaza and the Promenade Cafe. Normally the famous skating rink occupied that sunken spot, but the rink was closed for the summer, the space now filled with caf tables and tuxedoed waiters rushing about with aprons to their ankles. Beyond, Paul Manship’s massive golden Prometheus fell to earth, holding his stolen fire aloft. Behind it, the RCA Building shot up seventy floors into the sapphire sky. Roger had a lot in common with the imposing male figure of Wisdom chiseled above the building’s entrance. The furrowed brow. The beard. The angry eyes.

“I stopped for Bonnet’s boutonnire—”

“Oh, that’s worth keeping half of France waiting.” Roger bit into a doughnut, and powdered sugar cascaded down his beard. Despite what might kindly be called a husky figure, he was never at a loss for female companions.

His desk was heaped with folders, security documents, and dossiers on missing French citizens. According to the French Consulate Handbook, his job was “to assist French nationals in New York, in the event of theft, serious illness, or arrest and with issues related to birth certificates, adoption, and lost or stolen documents; to plan visits of French officials and fellow diplomats; and to assist with political difficulties and natural disasters.” The troubles in Europe provided plenty of work for us in all those categories, if you counted Hitler as a natural disaster.

“I have cases to get back to, Roger—”

He sent a manila folder skidding across the polished conference table. “Not only do we have no speaker; I was up half the night rewriting Bonnet’s speech. Had to sidestep Roosevelt letting France buy American planes.”

“France should be able to buy all the planes they want.”

“We’re raising money here, Caroline. It’s not the time to annoy the isolationists. Especially the rich ones.”

“They don’t support France anyway.”

“We don’t need any more bad press. Is the U.S. too cozy with France? Will that push Germany and Russia closer? I can barely finish a third course without being interrupted by a reporter. And we can’t mention the Rockefellers . . . Don’t want another call from Junior. Guess that’ll happen anyway now that Bonnet canceled.”

“It’s a disaster, Roger.”

“May need to scrap the whole thing.” Roger raked his long fingers through his hair, digging fresh trenches through the Brylcreem.

“Refund forty thousand dollars? What about the French Families Fund? I’m already operating on fumes. Plus, we’ve paid for ten pounds of Waldorf salad—”

“They call that salad?” Roger flipped through his contact cards, half of them illegible and littered with cross-outs. “It’s pathetique . . . just chopped apples and celery. And those soggy walnuts . . .”

I scoured my Wheeldex in search of celebrity candidates. Mother and I knew Julia Marlowe, the famous actress, but she was touring Europe. “How about Peter Patout? Mother’s people have used him.”

“The architect?”

“Of the whole World’s Fair. They have that seven-foot robot.”

“Boring,” he said, slapping his silver letter opener against his palm.

I flipped to the L’s. “How about Captain Lehude?”

“Of the Normandie? Are you serious? He’s paid to be dull.”

“You can’t just discount every suggestion out of hand, Roger. How about Paul Rodierre? Betty says everyone’s talking about him.”

Roger pursed his lips, always a good sign. “The actor? I saw his new play in previews. He’s good. Tall and attractive, if you go for that look. Fast metabolism, of course.”

“At least we know he can memorize a script.”

“He’s a bit of a loose cannon. And married too, so don’t get any ideas.”

“I’m through with men, Roger,” I said. At thirty-seven, I’d resigned myself to singledom.

“Not sure Rodierre’ll do it. See who you can get, but make sure they stick to the script. No Roosevelt—”

“No Rockefellers,” I finished.

Between cases, I called around to various last-minute possibilities, ending up with one option, Paul Rodierre. He was in New York appearing in a new American musical revue at the Broadhurst Theatre, The Streets of Paris, Carmen Miranda’s cyclonic Broadway debut.

I phoned the William Morris Agency and was told they’d check and call me back. Ten minutes later, M. Rodierre’s agent told me the theater was dark that night and that, though his client did not own evening clothes, he was deeply honored by our request to host the gala that evening. He’d meet me at the Waldorf to discuss details. Our apartment on East Fiftieth Street was a stone’s throw from the Waldorf, so I rushed there to change into Mother’s black Chanel dress.

I found M. Rodierre seated at a caf table in the Waldorf’s Peacock Alley bar adjacent to the lobby as the two-ton bronze clock sounded its lovely Westminster Cathedral chime on the half hour. Gala guests in their finest filtered in, headed for the Grand Ballroom upstairs.

“M. Rodierre?” I said.

Roger was right about the attractive part. The first thing a person notices about Paul Rodierre, after the initial jolt of his physical beauty, is the remarkable smile.

“How can I thank you for doing this so last minute, Monsieur?”

He unfolded himself from his chair, presenting a build better suited to rowing crew on the Charles than playing Broadway. He attempted to kiss my cheek, but I extended my hand to him, and he shook it. It was nice to meet a man my height.

“My pleasure,” he said.

His attire was the issue: green trousers, an aubergine velvet sports jacket, brown suede shoes, and worst of all, a black shirt. Only priests and fascists wore black shirts. And gangsters, of course.

“Do you want to change?” I resisted the urge to tidy his hair, which was long enough to pull back with a rubber band. “Shave perhaps?” According to his agent, M. Rodierre was a guest at the hotel, so his razor sat just a few stories overhead.

“This is what I wear,” he said with a shrug. Typical actor. Why hadn’t I known better? The parade of guests en route to the ballroom was growing, the women stunning in their finery, every man in tails and patent leather oxfords or calf opera pumps.

“This is my first gala,” I said. “The consulate’s one night to raise money. It’s white tie.” Would he fit into Father’s old tux? The inseam would be right, but it would be much too tight in the shoulders.

“Are you always this, well, energized, Miss Ferriday?”

“Well, here in New York, individuality is not always appreciated.” I handed him the stapled sheets. “I’m sure you’re eager to see the script.”

He handed it back. “No, merci.”

I pushed it back into his hands. “But the consul general himself wrote it.”

“Tell me again why I’m doing this?”

“It’s to benefit displaced French citizens all year and my French Families Fund. We help orphans back in France whose parents have been lost for any number of reasons. With all the uncertainty abroad, we’re one reliable source of clothes and food. Plus, the Rockefellers will be there tonight.”

He paged through the speech. “They could write a check and avoid this whole thing.”

“They’re among our kindest donors, but please don’t refer to them. Or President Roosevelt. Or the planes the U.S. sold France. Some of our guests tonight love France, of course, but would rather stay out of a war for now. Roger wants to avoid controversy.”

“Dancing around things never feels authentic. The audience feels that.”

“Can you just stick to the script, Monsieur?”

“Worrying can lead to heart failure, Miss Ferriday.”

I pulled the pin from the lily of the valley. “Here—a boutonnire for the guest of honor.”

“Muguet?” M. Rodierre said. “Where did you find that this time of year?”

“You can get anything in New York. Our florist forces it from pips.”

I rested my palm against his lapel and dug the pin deep into the French velvet. Was that lovely fragrance from him or the flowers? Why didn’t American men smell like this, of tuberose and wood musk and—

“You know lily of the valley is poisonous, right?” M. Rodierre said.

“So don’t eat it. At least not until you’ve finished speaking. Or if the crowd turns on you.”

Amazing! Enthralling! Enlightening! A must read for book clubs! Would have given 6 stars out of 5, if possible.
By SBCincinnati
Best book I have read this year! Absolutely enthralling, intriguing and insightful. I learned a piece of history I never knew about while reading this very well written and researched book. I love novels that are entwined around actual events. This novel follows three women, Caroline Ferriday, Herta Oberheuser and Kasia Kuzmerick, starting in 1939. How these women are impacted by World War II and how their lives intersect is the crux of this amazing story. I have read many books set in this same time frame, but this book came from three perspectives that I had not read before. After the first few chapters I was totally hooked.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to those who like books like "The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah or "Sara's Key" by Tatiana de Rosnay. Perfect for book clubs. There is so much in this book that would lend itself to great discussions. If I were you, I would pre-order this book.

historical fiction that tells the story of three very different women during WWII, effectively
By Shannon B.
It has been a long time since I've read a novel this moving. The story alternates between three characters. Caroline Ferriday, socialite and former actress in New York, works at the French embassy as WWII starts. The book features a romance between her and a French actor, and this story weaves in and out, not seeming to connect until at last it does. However, you don't mind your time with Caroline, although she is not the most compelling figure.

By far, that would be Kasia, spunky Polish teenager, who wants to be part of fighting the Germans and is caught up in the Polish underground. Before long, her boyfriend, sister and mother are all arrested and sent to a women's concentration camp for "re-education", a place where Nazi doctors performed unsavory operations on human subjects. This story reminds us all of the horror of Nazi Germany, of the huge numbers of people they killed, of all nationalities and backgrounds, and of the madness that Hitler was able to convince so many people to believe. Kasia throughout the story is brave, tough, but not entirely unbroken.

Finally, the most gut-wrenching parts of the story involve Herta, a Nazi doctor that somehow convinces herself that she is doing the right thing, the patriotic thing. It was so sickening to read that sometimes I had to put the book down and look away, as much as Kasia's sections sucked me in and kept me turning pages. She's an anti-heroine, but it's still important to understand her story, and what drove her - and she is a key part of the total story that is told. Don't worry - she doesn't get away with it and you never truly sympathise with her.

The book was well-written and apparently well-researched judging by the notes. The author was a former journalist and that shows the mark of it, and yet, it reads as fiction even though many of the characters were real people of that time period.

Lilac Girls is a Compelling Read
By femme azure
One of my favorite genres is historical fiction, especially set during WWII, focused on women heroes during the Holocaust, and Lilac Girls hits all the targets! However, a few of the characters are based on real people and some of the plot is also factual. Kelly's novel, which takes us to Poland, Germany, Paris, and New York City is told from the perspective of three women, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish underground member imprisoned at Ravensbrck, the only all female concentration camp for political prisoners, Herta Oberheuser, a German and the only female doctor at Ravensbrck, and Caroline Ferriday, a socialite and former actress who works at the French consulate in New York City. Herta and Caroline actually existed. Each of the main characters is fully developed. We follow their stories pre-war and post war. Each chapter of the individual woman's story ends with a cliffhanger and the reader is taken quickly into the next woman's story. Mostly told in alternating narratives, eventually the three stories come together smoothly. Scenes at Ravensbrck are gut wrenching and tragic, while in New York we see Caroline's frustrations as she works to help the French cause, especially concentrating on French children and orphans, and suffers with heartbreak as she becomes involved with a married French actor who is temporarily performing on Broadway. The three stories meld after WWII as the Ravensbrck prisoners, victims of experiments at the camp and known as "Rabbits" become a cause for Caroline. She raises funds to get the "Rabbits" the medical services they need because of their disabilities caused by the experiments. (This part of the text is true.) Characters are complex and believable; the text is well written, the plot is well developed and researched for historical background information. The adventures filled with sadness, yet hope, bitterness, but forgiveness are well worth the read. It was truly difficult to put this book down and it is compelling to read.

Emotional First Aid: Practical Strategies for Treating Failure, Rejection, Guilt, and Other Everyday Psychological Injuries, by Guy Winch

First aid for failure

Although we have bandages for cuts, chicken soup for colds, and ice packs for bruises, most of us have no idea how to treat day-to-day emotional injuries such as failure, rejection, and loss. But, as Guy Winch, Ph.D., points out, these kinds of emotional injuries often get worse when left untreated and can significantly impact our quality of life. In this fascinating and highly practical book he provides the emotional first aid treatments we have been lacking.

Explaining the long-term fallout that can result from seemingly minor emotional and psychological injuries, Dr. Winch offers concrete, easy-to-use exercises backed up by hard cutting-edge science to aid in recovery. He uses relatable anecdotes about real patients he has treated over the years and often gives us a much needed dose of humor as well.

Prescriptive, programmatic, and unique, this first-aid kit for battered emotions will appeal to readers of Unstuck by James S. Gordon and Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff.

First aid for the psyche
By Deb
As a therapist, I'm constantly looking out for helpful resources for clients. This book has quickly been added to my list. It so clearly explores the seven most common--and inevitable, if you're human!--psychological injuries and then provides specific "first aid" treatments for each:

1. Rejection--The emotional cuts and scrapes of daily life
Description:
Rejections can inflict four distinct emotional wounds, each of which might require some from of emotional first aid: lingering visceral pain, anger and aggressive urges, harm to self-esteem, and damage to feeling that we belong. (p. 17)
Treatments:
* Argue with self-criticism
* Revive your self-worth
* Replenish feelings of social connection
* Desensitize yourself

2. Loneliness--Relationship muscle weakens
Description:
Loneliness makes us constantly on guard, prepared for the disappointment and rejection we are sure will come. As a result, we miss opportunities to make social connections and behave in ways that push others away. (p. 53)
Treatments:
* Remove your negatively tinted glasses
* Identify your self-defeating behaviors
* Take on the other person's perspective
* Deepen your emotional bonds
* Create opportunities for social connection
* Adopt a best friend

3. Loss and Trauma--Walking on broken bones
Description:
Loss and trauma create four psychological wounds. They cause overwhelming emotional pain, they undermine our basic sense of identity and the roles we play in life, they destabilize our belief systems and our understanding of the world, and they challenge our ability to remain present and engaged in our most important relationships. (p. 85)
Treatments:
* Soothe your emotional pain your way
* Recover lost aspects of your self
* Find meaning in tragedy

4. Guilt--The poison in our system
Description:
Guilt usually serves an important function by alerting us to when we might have harmed another person or when any actions we're considering might do so. However, if our offense is serious or if we've already made significant efforts to apologize to a person we harmed or atone for our actions in other ways and our guilt remains excessive, or if we suffer from substantial survivor guilt, or separation and disloyalty guilt, emotional first aid is indeed necessary. (p. 119)
Treatments:
* Learn the recipe for an effective apology
* Forgive yourself
* Reengage in life

5. Rumination--Picking at emotional scabs
Description:
In order to break the self-reinforcing nature of ruminative thoughts and allow our wounds to heal, we must interrupt the cycle of rumination once it gets triggered, and we should weaken the urge to ruminate at the source by diminishing the intensity of the feelings that fuel it. We must also make efforts to monitor our relationships and to ease the emotional burden we might be placing on loved ones. (p. 154)
Treatments:
* Change your perspective
* Reframe the anger
* Go easy on your friends

6. Failure--Emotional chest colds become psychological pneumonias
Description:
When we fail repeatedly or when we respond to failures in ways that set back our confidence, our self-esteem, and our chances of future success, we run the risk of allowing our emotional chest cold to turn into psychological pneumonia. Because much of the anxiety associated with failures can build upon itself, it is best to be prudent and apply psychological first aid treatment as soon as possible after meaningful or bothersome failures occur. (p. 189)
Treatments:
* Get support and get real
* Focus on factors in your control
* Take responsibility and own the fear
* Distract yourself from performance pressure distractions

7. Low Self-Esteem--Weak emotional immune systems
Description:
Having low self-esteem weakens our emotional immune systems and inflicts three kinds of psychological wounds: it makes us more vulnerable to psychological injuries, it makes us dismissive of positive feedback and resistant to emotional nutrients, and it makes us feel unassertive and disempowered. (p. 232)
Treatments:
* Adopt self-compassion and silence the critical voices in your head
* Identify your strengths and affirm them
* Increase your tolerance for compliments
* Increase your personal empowerment
* Improve your self-control

Think of this book as first aid for the psyche. And, use as needed until symptoms subside.

Practical and completely achievable advice for handling emotional injuries
By lortz
I love how this book 1) acknowledges that we need to address our emotional wounds with they happen and 2) uses practical examples and gives tangible step-by-step instructions to help deal with emotional injuries. It's not another book that leaves you with a stack of ways you *should* think and *should* react. Instead, you give it a read to learn the science -- then keep it handy (like a medicine cabinet) for when an injury happens. I've read somewhere around 10 books in this genre and this one by far stands out as the most practical and achievable guide to emotional health.

Like having a kind, sensible friend on your bookshelf!
By P. Maurer
If you enjoyed his funny and insightful TED Talk, you'll deeply appreciate Dr. Winch's book. Written in the same intelligent-yet-accessible style, it's enjoyable to read cover to cover; however, it's also structured to be used--quite literally--as a first-aid handbook, to refer to as the need arises (and none of us is impervious to those bumps and bruises of life).

You're going to be glad you bought this book!

Starts at the beginning and takes you to the end...
By T Anderson
Designing developing natural user interfaces for touch and gesture on mobile devices is not the same as web and desktop UI design and development. Mobile devices are used in different contexts, and bring different personas to the table. Having web and desktop UI design experience does not make you a qualified mobile UI designer.

Although it was much worse back in the Dot Com Boom days, I still see publication and commercial print designers trying to design web sites the way they design a magazine. A lot of them finally figured out web design is different, and we are now dealing with getting them to realize web and desktop UI design experience does not make you a qualified mobile UI designer.

This book is a great place for them to start. It is the book for the beginner to get started with mobile interaction design. It is perfect for designers, developers, architects, project managers, and testers migrating from web and desktop application development to start with mobile interaction design.

It starts with an introduction to mobile interaction and sets up the context that the book's topics live in. The authors start at the very beginning of the mobile timeline and explain how we got to where we are today.

Chapter 1. A Look at Mobile and Its Main Players
Chapter 2. Design for Humans, by Humans
Chapter 3. Dynamic Differences in Mobile Design
Chapter 4. First Sketches of an App
Chapter 5. Finding the Right Design Flow
Chapter 6. Designing for Visual Appeal
Chapter 7. Working with Programmers
Chapter 8. Making Apps Usable by All
Chapter 9. Designing for Simplicity
Chapter 10. Gaining Valuable Feedback
Chapter 11. Refreshing a Design
Appendix A. Standout Apps
Appendix B. Apps for Designers
Appendix C. Artwork Requirements for Android and iOS

This book does a great job of pointing out the basics. Some times they use sidebars like this one- "When building applications, enable operating system features such as text-to-voice, color blindness controls, and enhanced zoom modes to see how your on-screen interactions work with these features..."

Sometimes I felt they got a little too basic. Like with this sidebar for example- "Don't confuse the term "interface chrome" with the Google Chrome browser. Interface chrome is somewhat common computer software design slang used to describe buttons of an interface...."

I actually laughed at that one because I thought it was just a joke. The second half of the tip clued me in. It wasn't a joke.

One of the coolest things this book did for me was push me to try Balsamiq Mockups. I have seen the tool used before, but I have been using SketchFlow and Storyboards in PowerPoint.

When I am in an environment where users believe a prototype and production release are the same thing, I go to extra lengths to delineate the two. Tools that present mockups that look like they have been sketched really help to get the point across.

Realistic mockups send the message that the app has screens, buttons, and if the screen changes when you clicked on the buttons, it must be done and ready to go. Users don't understand that they are just screens for vetting the UI and not working application screens.

The authors have a way of bringing to light things that are subtle and sometimes not so obvious. An example of that would be sandboxes and the way your applications now run within them. When designing mobile applications this needs to be taken into account.

The authors have created a website and have a page dedicated to each chapter of the book. Each page contains all the resources that they point out throughout the chapter. It is a very convenient way to get to the resources that they talk about.

If you are expecting a book with a ton of screenshots explaining what was wrong with each one, and then providing a solution to the problem, look elsewhere. It does have a ton of examples, but this book covers topics in a way that makes you think about them.

The last thing I will say about the book is that it is current. In the brutal world of mobile that says a lot about the book. I don't know how many books I have received on the day it was published only throw it aside because it is no longer current.

I highly recommend this book for every role on a mobile project. Everyone should understand mobile integration design at the level presented in the book.

An average mobile design book geared toward iOS and Android
By Kindle Customer
I found the first 6 chapters of the book the most beneficial. The remaining chapters were ok, but the information was not that great for me. Part of the reason may be because I am a developer who has helped design user interfaces and user experiences with the help of the client. The ideas in the remaining chapters are good such as designing for your users and making things simple especially for mobile apps.

As the author states up front, his experience is with iOS and Android. So, if you are looking for design guidance for Windows phone or tablet apps, this is not the book for you. He does mention some of the high level design (e.g. flat design) concepts of Windows. As an example he talks about iOS moving to a flat design, but waits 2 more chapters to say the design was actually in Windows first. As you may tell, I know a bit about Windows design concepts. I do not work for Microsoft, but develop on their platforms a lot for work.

This is the 3rd design book I have read in the last 6 months. I found this to be the least helpful for me. However, if you are an iOS or Android designer (or developer) than this book may be of benefit to you. If you are a developer with little design experience or a Windows designer / developer, than I am not sure this is the book for you.

Great book to give you a good grounding in mobile design.
By Dan Maslowski
Great book, but had a lot of history as to how we got to where we are. Good information to know, but you may skim if you are in a hurry.
But once you get to the parts about UX it is solid. Helps you make sure you cover all the bases.

I also enjoyed the Standout Apps Appendix. Having someone point out what makes the apps we use all the time great is very helpful in using similar ideas in your own apps.

Hitler's Armed Forces Auxiliaries: An Illustrated History of the Wehrmachtsgefolge, 1933-1945, by Jean-Denis G. G. Lepage

The story of Hitler's Wehrmachtsgefolge (armed forces auxiliaries) is less well known than that of Germany's other armed forces in World War II, such as the panzer divisions, the Luftwaffe and the Kriegsmarine. The Organization Todt (construction company), Reichsarbeitsdienst (labor service), Nationalsozialistische Kraftfahrer Korps (driver's corp) and Volkssturm (people's militia) were given the status of armed forces auxiliaries to protect their members under the Geneva Conventions should they be taken prisoner. By 1944, the Wehrmachtsgefolge comprised 40 percent of the German armed forces, and their contribution to the war effort was far from negligible. This illustrated history documents the development, structure and organization, uniforms, regalia and technical data of these units and discusses their role in the war and during the prewar period.

HITLER'S ARMED FORCES AUXILIARIES: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE WEHRMACHTSGEFOLGE, 1933-1945
JEAN-DENIS G.G. LEPAGE
MCFARLAND PUBLISHING, 2015
QUALITY SOFTCOVER, $45.00, 208 PAGES, ILLUSTRATIONS, CHRONOLOGY, BIBLIOGRAPHY, INDEX

In 1938, Hitler directed two paramilitary labor organizations-the Reichsarbeitsdienst, recruits undergoing pre-military training and Organization Todt, a unique mobilization of private construction firms-to support the armed forces (Wehrmacht) in their duties. Hard-pressed transport and supply units were further aided by the NSKK, the Nazi motoring organization, and, from 1944, by the Transportkorps Speer. Finally, in September, 1944, with military defeat looming, all manpower with any military potential was drafted into the Deutscher Volkssturm. These organizations were designated "Wehrmachtsgefolge" (Armed Forces Auxiliaries) to give their members protection under the Geneva Convention if taken prisoner. The total strength of these organizations was an estimated 1,200,00 in 1939, peaking in 1944 at an estimated 3,800,000-40% of the size of the armed forces. Although units were generally inferior to their armed forces equivalents, their contribution to the war effort was far from negligible.

Determined that these Auxiliaries shouldn't achieve armed forces status, Hitler decreed in 1941 that their uniforms shouldn't be Army field-grey; that they should wear rank insignia on collar-patches, not shoulder straps; and that their organization identification badge should be worn on the upper sleeve, not on their right breast. These orders were only partially obeyed: personnel, considering themselves increasingly to be members of the overall armed forces, introduced uniform and insignia modifications which, especially in the case of the NSKK and Transportkorps Speer, made them virtually indistinguishable from their comrades in the three armed services.

HITLER'S ARMED FORCES AUXILIARIES: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE WEHRMACHTSGEFOLGE, 1933-1945 is an excellent illustrated history that documents the development, structure and organization, uniforms, regalia, and technical data of these units and discuss their role in the war and during the pre-war period. This is a fascinating read and a very valuable book, looking at a crucial but often overlooked aspect of the Second World War. It remains focused on the title subject throughout, and in such a way as to make this really a useful study for anyone interested in this subject.

Crossing the Waters: Following Jesus through the Storms, the Fish, the Doubt, and the Seas, by Leslie Leyland Fields

The gospels are dramatic, wild, and wet―set in a rich maritime culture on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus’ first disciples were ragtag fishermen, and Jesus’ messages and miracles teem with water, fish, fishermen, net-breaking catches, sea crossings, boat-sinking storms, and even a walk on water. Because this world is foreign and distant to us, we’ve missed much about the disciples’ experiences and about following Jesus―until now. Leslie Leyland Fields―a well-known writer, respected biblical exegete, and longtime Alaskan fisherwoman―crosses the waters of time and culture to take us out on the Sea of Galilee, through a rugged season of commercial fishing with her family in Alaska, and through the waters of the New Testament.

You’ll be swept up in a fresh experience of the gospels, traveling with the fishermen disciples from Jesus’ baptism to the final miraculous catch of fish―and also experiencing Leslie’s own efforts to follow Christ out on her own Alaskan sea. In a time when so many are “unfollowing” Jesus and leaving the Church, Crossing the Waters delivers a fresh encounter with Jesus and explores what it means to “come, follow me.”

Review
Fields is a 38-year Alaskan commercial fisherwoman whose experience on and off the water guides readers through faith’s treacherous depths. To begin this memoir-cum-testament, she shares her often harrowing experiences on the waters as her family fishes for their livelihood season after exhausting season. Fields also parallels her personal story with that of Jesus’ relationship with his disciples on the Sea of Galilee. She traveled to the Jordan River and once there, found herself on a tiny boat with other fishermen learning the practices of fishing far from home. Throughout her text, Fields describes her life, challenges, and moments of doubt, skillfully pairing her own story with those of how Jesus and his disciples may have dealt with similar concerns during their own times. Readers of faith will appreciate the colorful depiction of both the land and sea that Fields offers, and they will see familiar Bible passages come alive in her contextualized retellings. In this helpful account, Fields displays a remarkable knack for exploring those treasures that lie underneath the surface. (Publishers Weekly)

This beautiful combination narrative/scripture study is packed with insights and challenges ...
By Ingrid Lochamire
Leslie Leyland Fields proves that God is forever teaching and leading us, whether in the rolling seas around Alaska or the murky waters of the Sea of Galilee. This beautiful combination narrative/scripture study is packed with insights and challenges that led me to dive deeper into the Word and into what I know about the fishermen Jesus called from their nets to "Come, follow me" over 2,000 years ago. I am a fan of Leslie's writing and trust her sound theology, as well as her deep appreciation of family, hard work and living life to its fullest.

Hankering for an Alaska fishing yarn?
By Lloyd Mattson
If you are hankering for a great Alaska fishing yarn, hanker no more. Leslie Leyland Field’s Crossing he Waters will feed that hanker like few books out there. Her skilled storytelling is spot on with the sights, sounds, smells, and feel of the greatest salmon fishery on the Planet. I know; I’ve been there.
Crossing the Waters is an honest book. It mingles Alaskan and Palestinian waters seamlessly, refreshingly free from tiresome gospel platitudes. You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of what it means to follow the Master Fisherman. You will come to know four flawed, hardy fishing partners and gather a wealth of Galilean lore.
Not interested in theology? Read Crossing Waters anyhow. Enjoy the stories and judge for yourself whether Leslie’s different take on Christianity makes sense. It sure does to me. I’ll be adding more of her writings to my must-read pile.

Newest Milestone for the Journey
By S. Hoover
We all have books that become milestones in this life's journey. "Crossing The Waters" just became my latest marker.

Leslie Leyland Fields led me through the hard parts of faith so I could more honestly examine my own life as a Christ-follower. Fields tackles the difficult issues of suffering, the existence of hell, broken relationships, unrealized promises of Scripture, and so much more. Through her vulnerability, she drew me along (nodding my head as I too have struggled) and softened my heart so I could hear the hard lessons.

With each page I waded deeper into the biblical truths. Fields illustrated profound theological truths with action-filled stories from her decades in a commercial fishing family as well as exploration of the fisherman's life on the Sea of Galilee. I promise you will never be bored! As I became more intimately familiar with the profession shared by many of the first disciples, familiar Bible passages took on new meaning. Jesus calming the storm, Peter walking on water, feeding the 5000, and calming the storm at sea feel now more like experiences than distant, unrelatable stories.

I highly recommend this tenth book by Leslie Leyland Fields. When you set sail with Leslie, you will return a changed person.
