Alfred Russel Wallace: A Rediscovered Life, by Michael A. Flannery

For years Alfred Russel Wallace was little more than an obscure adjunct to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Remembered only for prompting Darwin to write On the Origin of Species in 1859 by writing his own letter proposing a theory of natural selection, Wallace was rightly dubbed by one biographer “the forgotten naturalist.” In 1998 Sahotra Sarkar bemoaned Wallace’s “lapse into obscurity,” noting that "at least in the 19th century literature, the theory of evolution was usually referred to as ‘the Darwin and Wallace theory’. In the 20th century, the theory of evolution has become virtually synonymous with Darwinism or neo-Darwinism.” While the complaint still has a ring of truth, a decade of recent interest in Wallace has done much to bring him back from history’s crypt of forgotten figures. This shouldn’t suggest unanimity of opinion, however.

Some regard him as a heretic, others as merely a misguided scientist-turned-spiritualist, still others as a prescient figure anticipating the modern Gaia hypothesis. Perhaps Martin Fichman’s phrase hits closest and most persistently to the truth—“the elusive Victorian.” Can the real Wallace be found? If so, what might we learn in that rediscovery? The provocative thesis of this new biography is that Wallace, in developing his unique brand of evolution, presaged modern intelligent design theory. Wallace’s devotion to discovering the truths of nature brought him through a lifetime of research to see genuine design in the natural world. This was Wallace’s ultimate heresy, a heresy that exposed the metaphysical underpinnings of the emerging Darwinian paradigm.

A GREAT book about a wonderful man.
By E. Aagaard
Discover Alfred Russel Wallace!! Visionary biologist and thinker only now being vindicated. Much of what we "learned" about him is belied by the actual history of his life, by his letters, and by the testimony of his contemporaries. This is a wonderful corrective to the stuff I was taught, and it's a pleasure to read about a guy who wasn't rich or acclaimed, but worked so hard and long on his craft and on the scientific aspects of what he was collecting and observing.

If you're interested in biology, or even just human nature, you're going to enjoy this book. Highly recommended!

Astonishing story of Alfred Wallace, the actual discoverer of Natural Selection
By WSV1975
Those whom we remember had better publishers! Darwin had a great publisher, and he is the guy we know about, but we don't know about Wallace, who Darwin credited as the co-discoverer of the theory of Natural Selection. This is a great story, and shows the power of the pen, and the power of the dollar ( or the pound). Darwin was sort of a dilettante. He has his trip on the Begal, and then went home to England and talked, read, and wrote for 20 years before he published his Origin of Species. During all that time his poorer maintenance, Russel was spending years in the Amazon exploring and discovering thousands of species of animal and plant and sending those discoveries home to England and selling them for money. (Darwin did not have a money problem like Russel). Then Russel went on to the South Pacific where he discovered even more species of animal and plant. Along the way he stayed in contact with Darwin and told him in letters of his theory of Natural Selection and the survival of the fittest. Darwin's friends pushed Darwin to publish before Russel came home, and Darwin did, but to his credit he gave co-credit for his idea of Natural Selection to Wallace. When Wallace came home to England, Darwin got the English government to give him a pension, so Wallace was dependent on Darwin, and would never denounce him for using his work in his paper. Wallace, who had seen so much up close and personal during his decade in the wilds believe that the world was intelligently designed to work the way it does by God. Now, this was not a popular idea during those post-enlightened days. Wallace lived in relative obscurity, while Darwin, the "we don't need God" guy became famous. Now you know the rest of the story.

Wallace and the Darwin conspiracy
By John C. Landon
Wallace is a much neglected figure in the history of evolutionary biology, and this book attempts to set the record straight after many mendacious biographies in the mainstream of the paradigm have done their best to downgrade the so-called co-discoverer of Darwin's theory, so-called. Wallace's later dissent from natural selection obsessions as to the descent of man is greatly to his credit and shows that he had a deeper understanding than Darwin who became fixated by the mythology of random evolution and adaptationist scenarios.
But the truth is strange, stranger than Flannery can allow, for his otherwise charming book fails to consider the strong evidence of plagiarism by Darwin of the real source of the theory in Wallace. This evidence is summarized in The Darwin Conspiracy by Roy Davies. In a comment to a review of this book at Amazon Flannery states his position here, for anyone who wishes to follow it. I am puzzled by his hesitation here. Why? An entire generation of suspicious Darwin scholars has worked hard to uncover the evidence of the complot and the near perfect crime of Darwin. To refuse to deal with it is still one more blow to the reputation of Wallace, who is made out to be some kind of associate of the Discovery Institute. C'mon.
The distortions never seem to end with Wallace. The case for this plagiarism is tricky and perhaps hard to follow for many, but the evidence is clear that Darwin held very retarded, almost creationist, views until very late, when in 1855 he began receiving letters from Wallace, climaxing in the famous Ternate letter. One of the confusions is the way Darwin rewrote his earlier books to give a false impression, and another is the way he used the term 'natural selection' very early, but with an entirely different meaning, one very far from his later usage.
I am not sure why the Intelligent Design and Creationist critics of Darwin are reluctant to see this aspect of the paradigm's history. We need to face the fact that Wallace most probably created the Darwinism we know, and that he is therefore responsible for its side effects and un-glorious history. That he, as the more intelligent scientist, renounced his earlier views should be a caution to all scientists, but instead we see that he is simply sidelined and ridiculed by those who are fixated by the limited theory that Wallace created. We need to grasp the context here: everyone was totally confused by the evolution phenomenon and stuck in a kind of Platonic metaphysics about speciation. Wallace's acute observational research broke the deadlock and came to the gist of the divergence theory. But this breakthrough ended up becoming an obstacle to a still larger perspective.
In any case, Wallace deserves a break here, and while this work partially restores the man to some accurate accounting, the problem of the horrific Darwin and his scientific crime needs to be brought into all biographies of Wallace.
