A new spin on a classic idea.

The foreboding dwarven mountain fortress. As classic a fantasy concept as the elven tree village. But this is 4th Edition D&D we're living in, and this isn't your father's dwarven city.

That suits me fine. With the move away from the attitudes of classic races towards one other (elves and dwarves disdain for each other for example, is no longer a defining characteristic for either race) in 4th Edition, we also move away from the concept of the xenophobic dwarven city. These dwarves actually conduct business and the daily chores of life out in the air, rather than a mile underground, and that accessibility means other races might actually stick around for longer than it takes to sell their goods and get back out under the sky.

Setting aside the shift away from older stereotypes, Hammerfast is a unique city with interesting seeds for plots and the people doing the plotting. The skeleton of a major storyline is presented, but the focus of the book is more about the city than on any one story taking place within it. A few unique enemies are presented with actual stat blocks, but for the most part this supplement is all fluff.

If you're a Dungeon Master and want a dwarven city with some interesting wrinkles to drop into your campiagn, this book is for you. If you want inspiration for making your OWN dwarven city, this isn't a bad place to look for it. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a fully written adventure, look elsewhere. There are many story seeds given, but none of them are fully fleshed out. Even the one that is focused on as a heroic tier-spanning story requires the DM to fill in a lot of blanks. If you are looking for player oriented material, this book will be a complete waste of your money. Absolutely no new power, feats, or other such character options are presented.

Hammerfast is Interesting

Hammerfast describes a dwarven outpost that was given a small amount of detail in the original 4e Dungeon Master's Guide. This town is given far more detail, and even a colorful map showing the outpost in its entirety. Not only is the outpost described, but also important and interesting areas of adventure in the surrounding territory of the Dawnforge Mountains.

Hammerfast itself is a place of intrigue, with multiple factions -- dwarven, orcish, and undead -- trying to take the town for themselves. The plots and goals of these factions is given enough detail that they can be added to a game with ease. There is even a story arc described towards the back of the book giving detail to how a story can be introduced to the PCs to get them involved in the intrigues of Hammerfast.

Several NPCs are given detail, including backgrounds and motivations; however, only a few of these characters are given any game statistics.

There is a double-sided fold-out map. One side is a rough-and-tumble tavern within Hammerfast useable with D&D Miniatures. The other side is a full-color map of the entire outpost (not to scale with D&D Minis).

I like Hammerfast as it is a game suppliment that a GM can use even if they are not running a 4e game. Few things have actual game statistics, so descriptions are left up to an individual GM. This is primarily a fluff book, but one that is done well, in my opinion. The small price tag was an additional bonus. I hope to see more books like this in the future.

Unique Dwarven Outpost

This is not a standard generic dwarven settlement. Mike Mearls does a great job of putting together a unique dwarven outpost that is filled with many plot hooks and role-playing opportunities. The outpost is home to a rival faction of dwarves and orcs who are bound by a divine peace treaty. This arrangement creates a tense atmosphere great for intrigue, espionage and role-playing as well as combat(Just be careful you could have two major Gods join in).

The interior black and white art is well done and a hex map on the inside of the interior cover shows the area surrounding Hammerfast, also a full color poster map is included.

I am looking forward to the next supplement in this series.

Looking forward to more from Logan

This was a good and creepy sci-fi read from what seems to be a new author, and I'm looking forward to seeing more from him in the near future. Logan shows a unique ability to paint vivid pictures of his characters and their situations with his use of well placed metaphors and naturally flowing dialogue. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into a new, young author of fiction. A few days after my read and some of the scenes are still running through my head. Nice work!

I would definitely recommend this to any horror fan. Very vivid writing, great character work and a sharp concept. It reminded me of an updated twist on the blob or any of the old horror movies. Expect a turbulent, violent ride. My only complaint is with editing. There are a good number of typos, but the story and the quality of writing was definitely worth it!

Terror With Typos

I haven't finished Skin yet (although I will). The writer is talented and has a knack for creating tension and suspense. But this book is KILLING me with the typos and misspellings. I've come to accept that we'll encounter a few in self-published works, but at a certain point (say, the 50th example) it starts to feel like an insult to the reader.

I'm a writer and we all make mistakes. But before a book goes to market it's important to make it as error free as possible (usually through hiring a proofreader to bring fresh eyes to the manuscript). And unlike printed books, an ebook can actually be corrected after a purchase has been made. I hope Mr. Logan will do that, as his writing deserves better than this sloppy presentation.

About the Author
Jack Mayer is a pediatrician and a writer.� He began practicing pediatrics in 1976 in Enosburg Falls, Vermont, a small town in eastern Franklin County on the Canadian border. His was the first pediatric practice in that half of the county. He was a country doctor there for ten years, often bartering medical care for eggs, firewood, and knitted afghans. From 1987 - 1991 Dr. Mayer was a National Cancer Institute Fellow at Columbia University School of Public Health in New York City, researching the molecular biology of childhood cancer. Most of his scientific writing was done during those four years. He was also an academic pediatrician at Columbia University's Presbyterian Medical Center.
Dr. Mayer returned to Vermont in 1991 and established Rainbow Pediatrics in Middlebury, Vermont where he continues to practice primary care pediatrics. He is an Instructor in Pediatrics at the University of Vermont School of Medicine and an advisor for pre-medical students at Middlebury College.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mayer has written short stories, poems, and essays about his years in pediatric practice and hiking The Long Trail in Vermont. He was a participant at Middlebury College's Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in 2003 and 2005 for fiction, and in 2008 for poetry. LIFE IN A JAR: The Irena Sendler Project is his first non-fiction book.

A Heartfelt Story of Courage

One person can make a difference. This was, and continues to be, Irena Sendler's message to the world, and Jack Mayer's Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project conveys that message in a heartfelt manner that grabs and engages the reader from beginning to end.

The book is a story of a Holocaust hero, plus one of Kansas students and their teacher. The world had not heard of Irena Sendler until a group of students in Bourbon County started a National History Day project. The book is called a "novel" on the cover, but more closely the book is a "non-fiction" novel. The author went to Kansas on two occasions while writing the book, and he also traveled to Poland with the Kansas teens and their teacher, spending time interviewing Irena Sendler and child survivors. Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project is based on the true story of Irena Sendler and the Kansas students who "rescued the rescuer's story for the world."

Jack Mayer's description of the constant fear and peril of Sendler's rescue of 2,500 children from sure death is vivid; the reader feels transported back to the ghetto as the suspense and difficulty of Irena's missions are described. Moreover, while the story of Irena's acts of bravery and heroism of rescuing children from the Warsaw ghetto is captivating, equally so are the acts of bravery the young women discovered within themselves to overcome personal obstacles in their lives while researching tirelessly to find information on Irena. Megan Stewart had to come to terms with her mother's breast cancer; Sabrina Coons had to come to terms with being part of a military family and frequently relocating; and Liz Cambers had to come to terms with her mother's abandonment when Liz was only five years old. Guiding the girls through their National History Day project and struggles was their history teacher Norm Conard, who with his dedication and encouragement, assisted them in eventually finding Irena. The young women's struggles reveal their vulnerabilities and move the reader to sympathize with the teens and cheer for their achievements.

The meeting in Poland that takes place among Irena, the Kansas teens, and their teacher is nothing short of a miraculous act of fate. The emotions are palpable, and the events leading up to their visit keep the reader captivated. Tears flowed from my eyes as I read about the love and admiration that were felt between Irena and each student when they met and between Mr. Conard and Irena herself. The incredible manner in which this true story unfolded underscores the power good still has in this world, as well as the influence people have when they help others.

Jack Mayer's book begins with the Kansas teens trying to develop their mission of "making a difference and repairing the world" through their National History Day project. By the end of the book, it is obvious they not only accomplished that goal but greatly exceeded it. Through their research about Irena and their close relationship with her, they made, and continue to make, a difference to an innumerable amount of people and repaired each other's lives. They most certainly will make a difference for anyone who reads their inspiring story.

A Riveting Book

Knowing the story of Irena Sendler, I looked forward to the publication of this book. I knew I would enjoy reading it but I was unprepared to be absolutely riveted by it. I took the book home planning to read a chapter or two but ended up reading it from cover to cover in one sitting. While I knew Irena's story, I did not know the story of the three Kansas girls and their history project. On so many levels, this is an amazing story - the impact of a teacher on the lives of three young girls, the power of historical research, the incredible work done by Sendler and the human touch across both generations and continents. When the young women finally met the subject of their research, Irena Sendler, all differences were transcended. It did not matter that they had grown up in rural Kansas decades after Sendler did her heroic work in Poland in the late 1930's. Irena Sendler's life, continuing to be so beautifully portrayed in the "Life in a Jar" play, provides inspiration by demonstrating that ordinary people can do great things.

Touching

I have always avoided feeling the pain of the Holocaust until I read Life in a Jar. I let myself cry through many pages, horrified at how human beings can treat other human beings. By the end, I was crying for a different reason--how Irena Sendler and some students and Jack Mayer made a difference, living and telling this story. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to feel the worst and the best of what we human beings are capable of doing and being. Don't expect to have dry eyes. Thank you, Irena Sendler for saving so many lives and Jack Mayer and students for bringing this story to the world.

About the Author
Michael S. Lewis-Beck is F. Wendell Miller Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of Iowa, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. His interests are comparative elections, election forecasting, political economy, and quantitative methodology. He has been designated the 4th most cited political scientist since 1940, in the field of methodology. Professor Lewis-Beck has authored or co-authored over 240 articles and books, including "Applied Regression: An Introduction", " Data Analysis: An Introduction, Economics and Elections: The Major Western Democracies, Forecasting Elections, The American Voter Revisited "and" French Presidential Elections". He has served as an Editor of the "American Journal of Political Science", the Sage "QASS" series (the green monographs) in quantitative methods and "The Sage Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods". Currently he is Associate Editor of "International Journal of Forecasting" and Associate Editor of "French Politics". In spring 2012, he held the position of Paul Lazersfeld University Professor at the University of Vienna. During the fall of 2012, he was Visiting Professor at Center for Citizenship and Democracy, University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium. In spring 2013, Professor Lewis-Beck was Visiting Scholar, Centennial Center, American Political Science Association, Washington, D.C. During fall 2013, he served as Visiting Professor, Faculty of Law and Political Science, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain. Norpoth holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan. He has previously taught at the Universities of Texas, Arizona, and Cologne, Germany, as well as in the ECPR summer school on quantitative methods. He regularly assists the New York Times with its Election night analysis and has served as a polling analyst for the Foreign Policy Association.

William G. Jacoby is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Michigan State University. He is also a Research Scientist at the University of Michigan, where he serves as Director of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Training Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research.Professor Jacoby joined the MSU faculty in 2003. Previously, he held positions at the University of South Carolina, Ohio State University, and the University of Missouri. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1983.Professor Jacoby's main professional interests are mass political behavior (public opinion, political attitudes, voting behavior) and quantitative methodology (measurement theory, scaling methods, statistical graphics, modern regression). His current research focuses on citizen ideology and belief system organization, value choices and their implications for subsequent political orientations, measuring policy priorities in the American states, the implications of measurement assumptions for statistical models, and graphical strategies for data analysis.Recently, Professor Jacoby has taught courses on public opinion, regression analysis, scaling methods, and statistical graphics.

I am a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Ohio State University. My research and teaching interests include voting behavior, legislative behavior, and research methods, with a focus on survey research methods and scaling techniques.

Philip E. Converse is Robert Cooley Angell Distinguished University Professor of Sociology and Political Science, University of Michigan.

A modern classic in voting behavior

"The American Voter" was a genuine classic in the study of voting behavior. Authored by Angus Campbell, Philip Converse, Warren Miller, and Donald Stokes, the focus of the book was on the factors affecting citizens' voting in the 1952 and 1956 elections. One great challenge was analyzing survey research data BEFORE the advent of computers. Contemporary statistical techniques were simply not fully available.

This book, in essence, replicates the approach of the original volume, with a focus on the 2000 and 2004 elections. Rather than using contemporary statistical approaches, hey adopt much the same analytical practices as the original volume.

They also adopt the metaphorical perspective of Campbell, Converse, Miller, and Stokes, the "funnel of causality." Background factors, such as social and demographic factors are the wide part of the funnel. Closer to the actual vote? Party identification. Then, contemporaneous with the campaign--issues of the day and the candidates themselves. Chapter by chapter, the researchers explore how these affect vote choices in 2000 and 2004. One clear funding--a key reason Democrats lost both elections is that voters didn't much like their two candidates--Al Gore and John Kerry.

The final substantive chapter considers the importance of voting for democracy. It could have been more data driven; as it stands it is rather theoretical and abstract. Finally, a discussion of the factors involved in the outcomes of the elections of 1952, 1956, 2000, and 2004. Both similarities and differences. A fascinating discussion that shows considerable continuity.

All in all, an excellent book, examining continuity and discontinuity between the 1950s and the 2000s.

An Excellent Recasting Of A Classic

Lewis-Beck et al. do a excellent job of re-examining the questions raised by Campbell, Converse, Miller & Stokes nearly fifty years ago. The data the provide is timely and accessible for anyone with an undergraduate knowledge of statistics. I firmly believe this book will be one of the most important sources of information for anyone wanting to understand the nature of the American electorate in the twenty-first century for decades to come.
