In 1938, Hitler directed two paramilitary labor organizations-the Reichsarbeitsdienst, recruits undergoing pre-military training and Organization Todt, a unique mobilization of private construction firms-to support the armed forces (Wehrmacht) in their duties. Hard-pressed transport and supply units were further aided by the NSKK, the Nazi motoring organization, and, from 1944, by the Transportkorps Speer. Finally, in September, 1944, with military defeat looming, all manpower with any military potential was drafted into the Deutscher Volkssturm. These organizations were designated "Wehrmachtsgefolge" (Armed Forces Auxiliaries) to give their members protection under the Geneva Convention if taken prisoner. The total strength of these organizations was an estimated 1,200,00 in 1939, peaking in 1944 at an estimated 3,800,000-40% of the size of the armed forces. Although units were generally inferior to their armed forces equivalents, their contribution to the war effort was far from negligible.

Determined that these Auxiliaries shouldn't achieve armed forces status, Hitler decreed in 1941 that their uniforms shouldn't be Army field-grey; that they should wear rank insignia on collar-patches, not shoulder straps; and that their organization identification badge should be worn on the upper sleeve, not on their right breast. These orders were only partially obeyed: personnel, considering themselves increasingly to be members of the overall armed forces, introduced uniform and insignia modifications which, especially in the case of the NSKK and Transportkorps Speer, made them virtually indistinguishable from their comrades in the three armed services.

Leslie Leyland Fields proves that God is forever teaching and leading us, whether in the rolling seas around Alaska or the murky waters of the Sea of Galilee. This beautiful combination narrative/scripture study is packed with insights and challenges that led me to dive deeper into the Word and into what I know about the fishermen Jesus called from their nets to "Come, follow me" over 2,000 years ago. I am a fan of Leslie's writing and trust her sound theology, as well as her deep appreciation of family, hard work and living life to its fullest.

If you are hankering for a great Alaska fishing yarn, hanker no more. Leslie Leyland Field’s Crossing he Waters will feed that hanker like few books out there. Her skilled storytelling is spot on with the sights, sounds, smells, and feel of the greatest salmon fishery on the Planet. I know; I’ve been there.
Crossing the Waters is an honest book. It mingles Alaskan and Palestinian waters seamlessly, refreshingly free from tiresome gospel platitudes. You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of what it means to follow the Master Fisherman. You will come to know four flawed, hardy fishing partners and gather a wealth of Galilean lore.
Not interested in theology? Read Crossing Waters anyhow. Enjoy the stories and judge for yourself whether Leslie’s different take on Christianity makes sense. It sure does to me. I’ll be adding more of her writings to my must-read pile.

Newest Milestone for the Journey

We all have books that become milestones in this life's journey. "Crossing The Waters" just became my latest marker.

Leslie Leyland Fields led me through the hard parts of faith so I could more honestly examine my own life as a Christ-follower. Fields tackles the difficult issues of suffering, the existence of hell, broken relationships, unrealized promises of Scripture, and so much more. Through her vulnerability, she drew me along (nodding my head as I too have struggled) and softened my heart so I could hear the hard lessons.

With each page I waded deeper into the biblical truths. Fields illustrated profound theological truths with action-filled stories from her decades in a commercial fishing family as well as exploration of the fisherman's life on the Sea of Galilee. I promise you will never be bored! As I became more intimately familiar with the profession shared by many of the first disciples, familiar Bible passages took on new meaning. Jesus calming the storm, Peter walking on water, feeding the 5000, and calming the storm at sea feel now more like experiences than distant, unrelatable stories.

I highly recommend this tenth book by Leslie Leyland Fields. When you set sail with Leslie, you will return a changed person.

If you are in sales,sales management or any leadership role you will gain some terrific insights on leading and caring about people; having a relentless focus on understanding and delivering value to the customer; dealing with personal challenges; and igniting the passions of people around you. Bill's ability to grow, achieve, collaborate and lead as he has assumed greater responsibility is an amazing story.There is no doubt that if he can translate these values, shared by the top leadership of SAP, they will continue to be a juggernaut of a company. When love as family overrides selfish thoughts

Author of more than 70 monographs, study guides, and pamphlets, Anthony M. Coniaris released the 11th-edition of this text in 2004. The new and expanded 11th-edition contains 86 unique 'entries' consisting of one-to-four pages length--not chapters per se, which include introductory overviews of "What the Bible Says About Children," "Church Fathers on Child Rearing," with Preface and Foreword that appear unchanged since the first edition in 1977.

Father Coniaris has served more than 50 years to date as Priest assigned to St. Mary Greek Orthodox Church (GOAA), Minneapolis, MN (currently Priest Emeritus). The publisher for his media is Light & Life Publishing Company, which is the Orthodox Christian company he founded in 1966. Light&Life displays its inventory on more than 200 pages (2009-10 catalog), and arguably earns its self-promoted reputation as the world's largest Orthodox Christian supplier of books, teaching aids, CD's, video, icons, and pamphlets.

The layout and look of the 'Making God Real' text are practical, thus weaving various pastoral themes and sage advice across a span of 47 entries, before introducing the liturgical year with initial calendar entry in text of Great Lent. Careful editing prevented what might have amounted to derailing the progression of entries by a mid-manuscript introduction of the liturgical year.

Indeed, the text maintains a steady stream already established in the first 47 entries of how parents ought to raise children to sanctify all that children learn by doing what all family members proclaim of Christ in speech and action. Faith in action is the perspective of the Christian community, which Coniaris addresses to the nuclear family. But his advice to parents of children extends naturally to lifelong service within the Church and builds a global ethos of "making God real."

Fearless in voice and tone, the author attends to topics like sex education in the home and what to say about death to children with similar respect and candor as the essential theme of receiving Christ often in the Eucharist. To paraphrase the author's advice concerning frequent Communion (e.g. p. 112), he depicts bread and wine as extensions of Christ's humility and desire to serve.

Absent from the book are entries pertaining to the Internet, music, inter-faith marriages, respect for families of religions that differ from Orthodoxy and families for whom there is animus toward any religion, use of cellular technologies, families without children, blended families, and how to maintain open-channels of communication in families with pre-pubescent and teenage children. Therefore, I believe that the title should be re-worded to signify the book's actual content, viz. a focus on families with children up to age 12.

My recommendation brings enthusiastic support of the author's pastoral tone, and suggested use of this text as part of parenting/god-parenting classes. These classes ought to be requisite staples in six-month long or annual parish cycles prior to Baptism of infants, with additional programmatic and pastoral follow-up as necessary Orthodox support of families. Perhaps it is the lack of such parish programs that fuels a tragic need to evangelize the the very Christians who call themselves Orthodox and leaves many to wonder if God is real, indeed.

Brilliant Answers, Clearly Stated, to Essential Questions addressing the existential threat of Climate Change

Joseph Romm, scientist (PhD, MIT), prolific author, recognized expert on valuable clean energy solutions to deal with climate destabilization, and founder of the highly respected blog, ClimateProgress.org, has performed an admirable public service in his new book, Climate Change: What Everyone Needs to Know. There is no lack of climate information - most of it accessible on the Web, including the massive, multi-volume, several thousand pages of the InterGovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s Fifth Assessment Report (which gets read by very few citizens, and nor totally read by nearly all scientists, scholars, officials, advocates, or media reporters). Yet, because of the dis-information campaigns funded by fossil fuel interests, most people hear misinformation being reported by the media, and equally as bad, most media hardly ever cover climate destabilization, and when they do cover, they frequently report incorrectly. Yet, as Joe Romm emphasizes, "Climate change is now an existential issue for humanity. Since everyone’s family will be affected by climate change— indeed, they already are— everyone needs to know the basics about it, regardless of their politics. Many of the major decisions that you, your family, and friends will have to make in the coming years and decades will be affected by human-caused climate change."

This is the most up to date examination of climate change science, the effects of climate change on humans, policy related problems, and energy-related solutions. Everyone should read this book, and if you teach earth system sciences you should consider using this book as a guide in your teaching, or in some cases, assigning it in class. The book is written to be read by general audiences, so it would work well in a high school or college setting.

As Romm points out, climate change will have more of an impact on humans, including you, than even the Internet. It is an existential issue. Romm acknowledges that some of these impacts are already happening, but that future impacts are likely to be very significant. Over the last 10 years or so, we have seen remarkable superstorms, significant drought, notable wildfires, and killer heat waves. These events have made people sit up and take notice. For this reason, more people want to know more about climate change, and indeed, everyone should know something about this problem. Climate Change: What Everyone Needs to Know� is an effort to provide that information to the average person.

Romm’s book is divided into major sections: Climate Science Basics, Extreme Weather and Climate Change, Projected Climate Impacts, Avoiding the Worse Impacts, Climate Politics and Policies, The Role of Clean Energy, and Climate Change and You. Each of these chapters is divided into a number of bite-sized mini-chapters covering the larger topic in logical sequence, with helpful illustrations.

To me, one of the most significant contributions of this book is Romm’s discussion of severe weather and climate change. This is an emerging area of science. In my view, the weather related impacts of climate change have been visible since about 1980, but have increased more recently, even in the last five years or so. It is very difficulty to study these changes because severe weather events, while common, end up being rare when you divide them by region, season, kind of impact, and kind of climate related cause. Also, meteorologists, who are in the trenches when it comes to severe weather, have been reluctant in recent years to openly acknowledge climate change (especially among the “presenters” or TV meteorologists, as they are called in different countries). This is said to be because they are part of the press, which is in large part funded by the corporate world, and you don’t want to piss off your corporate sponsors. Romm’s sections on climate change and extreme weather are well thought out, well documented, and well presented.

Another area of strength is Romm’s treatment of energy alternatives. Romm is detailed and specific in his discussion of energy and suggestions about the needed changes.

Romm’s section on “Climate Change and You” is a unique contribution to the growing literature on this topic.

Romm points out that many Americans, when they decide to retire, consider moving to a place that is near a coast line, or a place that is relatively warm, or both. Bad idea. With sea level rise and increasing heat, one should really re-think that strategy. He talks about the impending crash in coastal property values (something I’ve been yammering about for some time now … the current value of land that will be inundated by sea level rise is actually almost zero, though the market has not adjusted yet!). He also covers what students who want to be prepared for a role in a climate-changing world should study, investment strategies, necessary changes in diet, and how one can (and should) reduce one’s own carbon footprint.

A clear, concise, and authoritative guide to climate science and solutions

Joe Romm is both a brilliant scientist and a master communicator. This book addresses the key issues facing humanity as we confront the climate challenge, and does so in an approachable and readable way. Romm asks and answers the questions an intelligent observer might have about climate, such as "Is climate change making hurricanes more destructive?", "What fraction of recent global warming is due to human causes vs. natural causes?", "In a warming world, why do some winters still seem unusually severe?", and "What is ocean acidification and why does it matter to sea life?". The whole book is a series of questions and answers, which allows the interested reader to jump straight to the questions of most interest, and breaks the book up into bite size pieces.

My own expertise is on climate solutions, and on these issues I find Romm to be almost invariably on the mark (as I would expect from a physicist with a Ph.D. from MIT and decades of experience studying these issues).

The professional literature on climate (like that summarized in the IPCC) is not generally approachable for the lay reader. Romm's book translates that literature for interested non-experts in an accurate, comprehensive, and authoritative way. There is no better introduction to climate science and solutions. Highly recommended.
